Incorporating newcomers into the church is the primary ministry challenge. The major theological principle involved is Christian hospitality. Christian hospitality is defined as attitude and practice of providing the atmosphere and opportunities in which strangers are free to become friends, thus feeling accepted, included, and loved. This requires the church to develop a selfless, welcoming spirit. The change theory of adaptive leadership is focused on the transformation of Bethany Church as we seek to invite strangers into our lives and into the faith community. Adaptive work requires a leader to lead by facing painful circumstances and developing new attitudes and behaviors. The desired outcome is the assimilation of these newcomers into our lives as we share in worship, fellowship and ministries of the church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["7eda0323-a6d9-4fe2-807a-22620dd389a5"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791128236416040960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:56:36.459Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:04:12Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ca49552d-45eb-4d99-9555-6c039c0b3d3d","accessControl_ssim":["51134262-499a-469c-9bdb-22db9d8c87d3"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Redefining identity and vision: a strategy for renewing energy for mission in a context characterized by change, diversity and ambiguity"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T20:50:35Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:56:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["dab36bf2-2102-4a92-9ef0-cedb6fcb7547"],"hasLease_ssim":["8f566ea2-30e6-4a2b-9cd6-83aecfa35f75"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Theodore Hiebert"],"year_tesim":["2000"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Thomas W Holmes"],"publisher_tesim":["McCormick Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Church growth"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that the redefining of identity and vision can increase energy for mission in congregations whose contexts are characterized by change, diversity and ambiguity. If the laity is engaged in intentional study of the scripture text prior to hearing it read and preached in worship, they are more likely to remember the text and sermon and to apply both to their daily lives. This thesis provides a practical method for the consistent study of the scripture text used in worship. By utilizing the Scripture Journals which are the foundation of this project, individuals and groups are given a viable opportunity to be involved in the both the study and practical application of the scripture text. The research attempted to seek out the utilization of certain formative spiritual disciplines which have been historically used by men and women of the church. This research also sought to identify what other, if any, spiritual disciplines and/or habits are being used today as a methodology for spiritual formation. The study sought also, to evaluate those findings in light of the biblical call to renewal and the use and practice of those disciplines, in varying degrees, by John Wesley, a significant theological mentor of the men and women serving in ministry in the Church of the Nazarene. The study was guided by three research questions: 1) What are the methods of personal spiritual renewal being utilized today by itinerant evangelists in the Church of the Nazarene? 2) Are these factors which influence the methods that are being used? 3) In what ways are current formative practices among itinerant ministers in the Church of the Nazarene, USA, congruent or incongruent with a biblical view of personal spiritual renewal among ministers and with the historical Christian tradition? The research considered several variables to ascertain their influence on the current practices of spiritual formation among itinerant evangelists. Those variables were tenure, age, gender, itinerant evangelism as means of support, number of revival meetings held annually, certification, spouse or teammate accompanied travel, educational training. The findings of this study revealed a strong commitment to the principles of the spiritual disciplines."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134613541748736,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:37:58.161Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
