Why?  In this project, particular attention is paid to the manner in which post-Enlightenment modernity has undercut the vitality of the mainline church especially with reference to the authority of scripture.  Modernity, with its emphasis on the rational, has forced scripture to be read through a naturalistic framework depriving the story of any supernatural elements. The project took place at the First Congregational Church, Wallingford, Connecticut, in nine sessions over six months.  Sessions guided participants through Pauline texts while considering the 'overlap' of scripture with congregational life today. Participants learned leadership skills to implement their insights. Short-term feedback was generally positive. What was borne out by previous research held true for this project: a television ministry doesn't increase church membership.  However, our research has demonstrated that people do watch religious programming, and with those who have participated in this ministry, we have forged informal links of church. Covenants become merely dead pieces of paper with no hold on our hearts unless they are undergirded by relationships that allow them to endure over time.  Covenantal relationships develop through communal practices that nurture them, such as discernment, dialogue, worship, testimony, hospitality and forgiveness. Sixteen written questionnaires of graduates and eight case studies of graduates were personally interviewed.
