The thesis was tested through a case study at Zion Lutheran Church, Ferguson, MO.  The case study involved a congregational storytelling event, six narrative sermons, faith sharing groups, and a questionnaire. The literature review includes research in religious, denominational, child psychology, and child rearing publications. There is also an extended treatment of the Scriptural record. The ChurchSmart Resources' questionnaire for the pastor and thirty questionnaires for the lay people were utilized.  The eight factors of a healthy church were derived from Christian Schwartz's 'Natural Church Development.'  Seventy-nine interviewees participated between May 22 and September 12, 2000.  An optional ChurchSmart Resources 'Releasing Your Church's Potential' seminars were also facilitated. The eight respondent churches were asked to form an implementation team to execute the recommendations by the ChurchSmart Resources personnel and the researcher. The research employed a descriptive/historical research design to obtain self-reported observations to open-end variable in a 'command' approved 'Hymnal Revision Questionnaire.' The literature review seeks to demonstrate the thesis theoretically.  In practice, the thesis is demonstrated quantitatively and qualitatively by the use of a questionnaire and interviews with patients. The following areas were examined: acceptance of the chaplain's ministry, the chaplain's supportive ministry, the chaplain's ministry to help the patient cope, and the chaplain's ministry to the patient's private concerns.  The findings demonstrate that there is a high level of satisfaction with each aspect of pastoral care. A cross-disciplinary model of hope was constructed using the writings of philosophers Bloch and Marcel, theologian Moltmann and psychologist Erikson. Secondly, using the Snyder Hope Scale, the Cooper-Smith Self Esteem Sale and Paloutzian and Ellison's Spiritual Well-Being Scale, the study tested the model by investigating the relationship amongst hope, self esteem and spiritual well-being in Australian students.  Subjects were 414 students from undergraduate programs offered by Australian Catholic University.  The study found that students had a high degree of hope, expressing this in goal-related thoughts and in action for social justice.
