Turnaround churches were identified as those with an average worship attendance between 50 and 200 as of 1990, which were either declining or plateaued for the period 1984-1990, but experienced growth of 50 percent or more for the period 1990-1996 as measured by average worship attendance. Of the 377 churches in the conference, five churches plus the church pastored by the researcher satisfied these parameters. Personal interviews of laity and clergy were used to assess factors contributing to plateau and decline and factors leading to turnaround and growth in these five churches. The researcher's church was used for pretesting and for comparison. The study revealed that the following factors, listed in order of significance, contributed to plateau and decline: weak pastoral leadership, clergy sexual misconduct, the absence of a Biblical focus, weak preaching, the absence of planning or goal setting, the absence of young people and children, and facility problems. The most significant factor contributing to turnaround and growth was strong pastoral leadership which possessed the following qualities: positive personality, good preaching skills, vision and planning skills, being accessible to the congregation, and modeling faithfulness. The findings of the study revealed, contrary to the opinion of many West Coast United Methodist pastors, that the church growth methods and tools used successfully in the five turnaround churches were very consistent with those identified as most significant by the larger body of church growth research."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["6c1e11e8-b66e-47b6-8fe9-6c546c20935c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134547851608064,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:36:55.499Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:44Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:22:07Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ac18450d-ee57-45c8-830e-4c28e5160d24","accessControl_ssim":["9bd8fcdd-d457-4ca5-93bd-b5eedba1f37f"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The church learning to extend hospitality: to each other, to guests, and to strangers in our midst including the least and the lost"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:43Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:06:13Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3292495d-5e04-40ea-abb9-c6b20bda927a"],"hasLease_ssim":["ed70dbcf-c60b-492a-b793-da415ece8665"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Lewis A Parks"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Clergy use it even when they have misgivings. They do this because the unity candle is becoming an effective symbol of marital unity. Although the marriage ceremony has developed over the centuries in an effort to express a needed theological message for marriage, it by no means is complete or final. The marriage ceremony contains many practices that were originally secular in nature and subsequently sacralized. The unity candle is another such practice undergoing this same sacralization process. Laity-influenced popular religion has supported this process over the last thirty years. This effort will lead to the eventual acceptance and assimilation of the unity candle as a legitimate part of the liturgy of the United Methodist marriage ceremony."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["77231467-10ce-4737-858a-8cc38e70a4f9"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1851873069580156928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T18:49:43.703Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:43Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T02:03:30Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"184b6101-befd-412d-bf43-f0365e6fc958","accessControl_ssim":["ec66e4f0-9ff4-45a9-bdb0-40b2e025d070"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Preaching law/gospel theology in a postmodern world"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:42Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T22:50:32Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d7f7e6ec-dce2-46ba-96d3-4ecf40c0feff"],"hasLease_ssim":["1ec97e6a-1ea1-4934-b98c-77cd9d75e215"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Michael Rogness"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Nathan P Sager"],"publisher_tesim":["Luther Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Postmodernism","Law and gospel","Lutheran preaching"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The thesis is that 'preaching Law and Gospel can be strengthened by rethinking the traditional categories in response to the challenges of the contemporary context.' Quantitative surveys and qualitative analysis show that a large majority grew in their understanding and practice of prayer."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["United Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["f0f9c284-37b6-440c-96ab-39e6509e82ee"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791127652177805312,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T06:47:19.287Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:48:01Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1ed57909-e6ca-4fb3-8acb-8c6f85cfae97","accessControl_ssim":["918a0649-ec62-4386-a9fa-9a3a4ff9c02c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Renewing congregational mission: transformation through education"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:39:01Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:02:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["65cdc499-c471-46bd-a368-07bcb5463c49"],"hasLease_ssim":["f92f7a9d-2b09-4139-a25a-d0bd2dcadaa6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Ronald H Cram"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Scott Anthony Rollins"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Congregations","Missions--Theory","Church group work"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project proposes that small group study creates opportunities for congregational transformation, in the way the church thinks about and practices mission. It reveals how the 'being'--heart, soul, mind--of the pastor is reflected in the 'being' of the people the pastor leads. A primary premise of the paper is that pastors focus their attention more on 'doing' than 'being.' Pastors are searching for help and hope, attempting to find the program, plan, or method that will bring growth to the church. However, the power and work of God rests in the 'being' of His people through the indwelling work of the Holy Spirit. Programs, plans, and methods only aid the work of the Spirit. The thesis begins with the statement of the problem of how pastors misplace their primary focus on 'doing' activities. It reveals the scriptural truths about 'being,' and reveals the 'being' of God's leaders throughout the Bible. It then diagnoses the influence society has on the pastor with regards to 'being' and 'doing.' The work contains a chapter on the pastor and how to evaluate 'being,' and concludes with biblical and ministry reflections to assist the pastor and church in applying the truths of the thesis. The thesis reflects the ministry application at Chino Valley Community Church, and includes extended ministry opportunities beyond the church. Recorded are notes from sermons, guest speaking appearances, and a leadership training course that reflect the findings of the thesis."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["31b95ee0-a31c-43dc-8ec9-d97b30239a2d"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791132018495455232,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:56:43.332Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:38:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:23:06Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ffaa6cf9-6ae8-4cea-a5f4-2b52a50cc714","accessControl_ssim":["c57437e2-254e-4c74-b5f9-a1e3ff02bf7a"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Consultation in the United Methodist Church: bringing together itineracy, consultation, and mission"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-11T19:38:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T05:26:36Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["43acdefe-ead3-4b47-afbc-7985185d3ba8"],"hasLease_ssim":["16ef3807-fbf4-4c59-a8cb-f89d1da15ff0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["John Patton"],"year_tesim":["1999"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Denver Craig Rikard"],"publisher_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Institutionalism (Religion)","United Methodist Church--Government","Itinerancy (Church polity)--Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis states that the consultation process of the United Methodist Church, a process related to the itineracy, must be connected to the church's mission. The problem stated is that currently the two processes are alienated from the church's mission as a result of institutionalism. The method of research was to gather information from three major fields: sociology, history, and theology/ecclesiology. The research substantiated the existence of institutionalism and its negative effect upon consultation and the itineracy. In turn, study revealed the need for connecting the two to the local church and its mission for effective functioning."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b5eba5c2-141b-4673-9689-2f9720736859"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129907002081280,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:23:09.655Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
