He is leading national pastors and foreign missionaries to team together to train the greatest resource of workers, church members, to start churches.  This paradigm has great potential in the Philippines.  The focus of this project, 'TEAMission,' is to design and to implement an indigenous training model that teaches, equips, and mobilizes members of a local church for the mission of planting churches in West Pangasinan, Philippines.  TEAMission forms an acrostic which has the meaning of teaching, equipping, and mobilizing church members for the mission of planting churches.  TEAMission will consist of three sessions led by the project leader and a team of pastors in the Western Pangasinan Association of Southern Baptist Churches (West-PASABAC).  Working interdependently, these leaders will plan, promote, and conduct a ten-week training model in a local church. This group, designated as trainers, will teach enlisted church members or trainees skills in five areas: evangelism, discipleship, Bible-teaching, leadership, and church planting.  The trainees will attend classes that will equip them with tools needed to start churches. They will be organized into church-planting teams and sent out to lead weekly Bible studies in strategic places for new churches on their own mission fields.  The training model will be evaluated by the project participants at the conclusion of the project.  This project will utilize questionnaires, videotaped interviews, lectures, class discussions, fieldwork reports, and written evaluation. A randomly selected group of twenty-eight Brethren In Christ pastors from North America submitted sermon tapes for evaluation.  After the tapes were received, the sermons were analyzed and evaluated with an evaluation guide based on twenty specific hermeneutical principles.  The hermeneutical principles were distilled from a step by step Bible study model developed from a study of the literature and validated by three Asbury professors.  The focus of the study is on pastors' skills in interpreting Scripture and culture. The project traces the development of the retreat's design to accomplish these objectives. The achievement of these objectives is evaluated through the use of reflections by retreat participants, surveys of retreat alums, and interviews with pastors. The setting is western Chesterfield County, Virginia, whose population will grow from 14,700 to 32,700 in the next ten years. The author is the founding pastor of a United Methodist Church chartered in 1987 in Chesterfield. Two challenges provided the impetus for the project. One, finding a common religious practice among a diverse people, and two, expanding participation in the liturgy. Advent and Christmas Eve worship services were selected to meet both challenges. Contemporary homiletics focuses on the form of the sermon by applying the knowledge of communication and good storytelling to the biblical text in order to make the sermon interesting and relevant to the modern audience. The study of preaching that examines the spiritual power behind the sermon and also the spiritual powers of darkness that attempt to hinder the reception of the gospel has received much less attention in contemporary study. After completing a theological reflection of these issues and a literature review of relevant material, this study will examine the issue of worldview and establish that the western worldview is incomplete and inconsistent with the biblical account. Second, having established the existence and influence of spiritual powers in the world, the study will examine the role of the Holy Spirit as he gives spiritual power to preaching. Third, the study will examine the particular ways in which the kingdom of darkness attempts to hinder the reception of the preaching of the gospel. Fourth, the study will examine the role of prayer in the life of the preacher and its relationship to preaching. Fifth, the study will propose a number of foundational principles for preaching, in light of the cosmological reality. It is concerned with the proper understanding and functioning of a team and how a team improves the quality of sermons. The thesis begins by showing that preparation teams are in-line with direct and indirect emphasis of Scripture. Principles for the effective function of a preparation team are drawn from business literature about teams. The work also includes a survey of pastors with experience in a sermon preparation team. To this end, a questionnaire entitled 'MONEYMATTERS' was developed as a tool to help ministers and Christian counselors determine the underlying motives and accompanying behaviour patterns which govern a person's use of money and in fact, their whole outlook on life. This thesis analyzes 201 questionnaires submitted by parishioners of ten 'Main Line' congregations in southern New Hampshire/Northeastern Massachusetts.  The findings were that all but two respondents believed in healing through prayer though they differed about its frequency, and that a sizable minority reported experiencing healing.  Such belief in and experience of such healing was generally consistent across various demographic categories.
