The scholars S.N. al-Attas, Wael Hallaq and Umar Farouq Abd-Allah have answered this question by stating that the principal essence of Islam is its ethico-moral system, which informs humanity of its identity as God’s moral subjects by instilling within them the prophetic ethic. Yet Islam’s identity formation, which is meant to protect the human fitra, i.e. the primordial human state, and is a foundation of its educational paradigm and ethical philosophy, is interrupted by the rise of the modern nation state through its refashioning of the human self and its use of secularism as a medium to make citizenship the primary principle of identity.1 This article contends that due to the traumatic social and psychological effects of the modern nation state and colonialism upon the Muslim collective consciousness and religious identity, restoration of Islamic education must take place through holistic means. Achieving the ethical aims of Islamic education must come through reclaiming the Islamic identity, rerooting its pedagogy in the Qur’anic worldview, reviving traditional spiritual orthopraxy and utilizing relevant psychological research to integrate contemporary psychological models aimed at identity development and healing. Restructuring Islamic curriculums ought to be a holistic enterprise that seeks to reformulate an “alchemy of happiness”2 that heals, edifies and informs the Muslim psyche - imbuing it with the traditional Islamic identity in a way that is therapeutic, relevant and reinvigorating."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["040e2605-0236-4023-82f1-394715dfbf94"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836642747210006528,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T16:10:16.428Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-24T20:55:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-24T21:14:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"498b72ec-2d18-4e04-91b7-02fe89d9ec4c","accessControl_ssim":["e753eb42-b308-4203-a371-30443e4efb60"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["7d494444-804e-4beb-9cc0-bcddd4e69e21"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["7d494444-804e-4beb-9cc0-bcddd4e69e21"],"depositor_ssim":["sharon.pringle@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["sharon.pringle@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Traditional African Spirituality as an Academic Discpline"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-24T20:55:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-04-24T20:55:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["bfa9cec9-6951-4a2f-8515-4fe6b4a3f5b1"],"hasLease_ssim":["5a2171f2-22a8-485b-b15c-be7659b8dbb6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Sharon R. It is a call to resurrect Traditional African Spirituality as an authentic spiritual construct and a retelling of religious history to dispel the myth that it is not worthy of academic study. This thesis provides valuable insights into the problem of identity and perception that has caused theological institutions to evade African Theology—perceived as unacceptable and unappealing—thus preventing it from crossing academic boundaries as a field of study worthy of research, ministry, and scholarship. This work advocates for the Chicago Theological Seminary to engage in radical intellectual transformation by extending the borders of Religious Studies beyond Judaism, Christianity, Islam, and, more recently, Buddhism and Hinduism to include Traditional African Spirituality as a serious academic field of study. It presents ten successful African Spirituality programs across the United States offered at higher-learning institutions. It also presents a high-level analysis of alternatives (an analytical comparison tool) that uses adjectival rating rationale against evaluation criteria to assess the viability and benefits of implementing Traditional African Spirituality as a new discipline. This assessment projects that implementing Traditional African Spirituality will exceed performance expectations and revolutionize the study of theology at the Chicago Theological Seminary. This research proves that it is time to remove the stigma and allow African Theology to cross academic borders. It deserves a seat at the table; without it, the study of religion at the Chicago Theological Seminary is incomplete and void of its true power."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/7d494444-804e-4beb-9cc0-bcddd4e69e21?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["7d494444-804e-4beb-9cc0-bcddd4e69e21"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["7d494444-804e-4beb-9cc0-bcddd4e69e21"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["sharon.pringle@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1797252189238853632,"timestamp":"2024-04-24T21:14:12.982Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-24T20:10:36Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T15:55:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"da06dbc2-e0dd-4afe-8729-12b14901a37b","accessControl_ssim":["ac707b65-c118-417b-8601-b066f999e421"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["b45e4224-c253-44eb-ab72-4e413d5dfde8"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["b45e4224-c253-44eb-ab72-4e413d5dfde8"],"depositor_ssim":["kristen.mcbrayer@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kristen.mcbrayer@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Practice of Preaching to Build Biblical Literacy"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-24T20:10:36Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T15:55:54Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["f0b352fc-3a00-48d6-9359-c58178de6d0f"],"hasLease_ssim":["def84a8e-f5c7-42db-a87a-07d029dddcd6"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry in Preaching"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Biblical literacy is declining which means that engagement from a place of faith in the public sphere is also declining. This risks scripture being misinterpreted in public spaces and leaves us without an engaged biblically literate audience with the skills to push back. This paper argues that narrative preaching is the most effective model of preaching to a modern audience to engage them. First, it reviews the literature to investigate the role of Seerah in providing a framework for Muslims that can help them improve their personal, social, and ethical lives. Next, the research proposes various pedagogical approaches that can improve the teaching effectiveness and learning experience of the Prophetic Biography in contemporary contexts and settings. Moreover, the thesis supports a holistic approach to interdisciplinary learning by methodically addressing the various needs of different learners. The findings of the study suggest emphasizing the interconnected nature of integrating modern pedagogical methods, involving an interdisciplinary approach, and leveraging technology in teaching Prophetic Biography. This holistic approach can enhance educational practices, making the teachings more relevant, engaging, and accessible to a diverse and technology-driven student population. Offering a comprehensive and structured understanding of Seerah literature and incorporating an interdisciplinary (such as science, history, psychology, culture, languages, and relevant literature) perspective, such an approach can positively influence the discourse on Islamic education. Moreover, it carries a greater potential to provide students with a broad worldview, which can enhance their ability to apply the Prophet’s(PBUH) life in the current age."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["08b40569-b96e-4879-8e5c-7a97c62657ff"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasar.khan@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836652967000801280,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T18:52:42.780Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2024-04-23T15:38:55Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:50:29Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"130ad8c6-4b5f-480e-a0a7-840beed40aa2","accessControl_ssim":["e6533bbb-7219-47b5-9d93-fa4345d73abc"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["497b3e31-2bee-427a-9bd2-ab3fd7204aaf"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["497b3e31-2bee-427a-9bd2-ab3fd7204aaf"],"depositor_ssim":["hedaiah.aishat@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["hedaiah.aishat@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["The Influence of Islamic-Based Parenting Practices in the Contemporary West on the Social and Emotional Development of Children"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2024-04-23T15:38:55Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:50:28Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0e9192fa-cfce-42b9-bcba-542f0946fdcc"],"hasLease_ssim":["92ed1024-0032-4121-b550-459e77ef7efa"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["0"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["0"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Islamic Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"department_tesim":["Bayan Islamic Graduate School"],"year_tesim":["2024"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Aishat, Hedaiah"],"keyword_tesim":["Effective Parenting","Parent-child relations","Islamic Parenting","Effective Child-Rearing","Sunnah-based child-rearing","Parenting","Islamic Child-rearing","Islamic Parenting in modern west","Child-Rearing","Child-rearing strategies"],"subject_tesim":["Religious education","Parent and child--Religious aspects","Islam","Religion and science"],"abstract_tesim":["This research project examines how Islamic-based parenting strategies are employed in the contemporary West, with an emphasis on how they impact children’s social and emotional growth. Based on the Islamic Prophetic model, which divides parenting into three seven-year increments that emphasize distinct features, this effort attempts to investigate how aligning parenting techniques to these increments contributes to nurturing children who embody excellent virtues of Islam. The research aims to provide a comprehensive understanding of effective parenting techniques at each developmental stage by integrating insights from psychological and evidence-based theories. The study provides insightful guidance for Muslim parents navigating the challenges of raising righteous and well-adjusted children in the modern West.
