Chapter one describes the church setting, defines the project, and provides rationale for this work. Chapter two examines Mal 1:6-2:9 and the book of Acts as representative Old and New Testament passages regarding pastoral leadership and the nature of the church.  Chapter three examines contemporary writings on leadership and the family church and presents a pastoral leadership style for such churches. Chapter four describes the intervention and testing used in the project: sermons and meetings, questionnaires and interviews.  Chapter five analyzes the results of the testing using both subjective and objective evaluations.  It also reviews and comments on the process followed in this project. The grief model of Wayne Oates and the life-cycle model of Erik Erikson are used along with selected Scripture from Psalms 13 and 27 and Lamentations 3.  Chapter two reviews the creation of man and woman, as told in Genesis, and offers an interpretation of God's intention for their relationship, which humans have aborted.  Chapter three examines the disciplines of the psychosocial sciences with particular focus on Erikson's life-cycle task for the young adult's struggle to develop from isolation to intimacy.  Chapter four explores the work of Heinz Kohut and Soren Kierkegaard, and Tommy King to propose, in chapter five, a correlational model of grief for Christian young adults who experience divorce. Four experiential small groups were conducted in the development of the program sponsored by the Immanuel Baptist Church of Lexington, Kentucky.  The methodology was largely intuitive, integrating the life experience of the author and psychological and theological literature.  The stated goal was to guide young adults toward emotional and spiritual healing within the small group context.  The series of instruction and support was designed to help adults identify connections between experiences of parental divorce and present relationship difficulties. Biblical materials dealing with divorce and related pastoral care issues were explored to provide foundation, context and themes for this ministry. Out of these themes came the five sessions of the adult child of divorce workshop. The program was presented as two weekend retreats/workshops offered to lay Franciscans belonging to different regional communities.  These weekends, presented by a team including both clergy and laity, sought to provide a spiritual framework for the participants, but also focused on encouraging leadership development through the sharing of experience, the modeling of leadership style, and the presentation of educational material.  The training of the team and its participation in the retreats were themselves part of the project. The biblical and theological basis for regular Bible reading is established.  The psychology of habit and the application of motivational techniques provides a model for the promotion of behavioral change.  A specific year-long program of stimuli is designed to motivate the congregation of First Baptist Church to establish and maintain a daily habit of Bible reading. Particularly studies were the Builder, Boomer, and Buster generations. Communication theory and technological advances that have affected these generations were also reviewed.  New homiletic methods, particularly of Craddock, Lowry, Buttrick, Mitchell, and McClure are applied. How do we preach the truth of Jesus Christ when these three generations have all come to understand truth quite differently? Chapter one defines the structure of the project, the purpose and research methodology. Chapter two traces the beginning of evangelical mission in Nigeria from its beginning in 1850 up to 1997, and analyzes its methods, strategies and philosophies. Chapter three examines the socio-economic and political influences that affected Nigerian Christianity, dividing its history into four epochs.  Chapter four looks at the ecclesiastical influences of the Nigerian church and its missions.  Chapters five and six spell out the recommendations for improving the mission program. After examining the contextualization of preaching and teaching from biblical and historical perspectives, the project presented the nature and principles of contextualizing preaching in reference to three sermon styles (expository, topical, and narrative).  Two messages of each sermons style were preached between a pre-test and post-test questionnaire.  Sermon evaluation forms were also used with six sermon evaluation committees.
