One hundred potential laborers were invited to become active in a specific ministry and sixty-two persons agreed. The topic is explored through the researcher's experience and theology and the theological tradition of the church, specifically the United Church of Canada, and using a qualitative research methodology. The specifics of the process involve a preacher basing his sermons on the Old Testament Lectionary texts for four weeks of the Epiphany season. Both the preacher and the congregation then reflect, through written and verbal responses, on the experience. The researcher's assumption prior to the thesis work was that the Old Testament is not being preached often or well enough in the United Church of Canada, and the data collected validates the assumption. The dissertation draws on the writer's experiences as a Rotuman working with Rotuman, English and Fijian speaking congregations in Fiji and Australia.    Methodologically, it pursues a social analysis of the community's culture and faith through interviews with people in different places.  It also describes the performance of live cultural events with worship. Jung's concept of the archetype discloses the possibility of understanding literature and myth as creative forces that shape our spiritual and psychological development.  This dissertation investigates the three main versions of the legend of the Holy Grail, Perceval, Perlesvaus and the Queste del Saint Graal, for their archetypal descriptions of the Warrior (Perceval), Magician (Merlin), Lover (Lancelot) and King (Arthur).  Modern examples are also given for these four archetypes--George S. Patton, Vincent van Gogh, C.S. Lewis and Dag Hammerskjold--as paradigms for the expression and spiritual possibilities for modern men.
