What, indeed, is God doing with us, day by day, and year by year? And how can we more fully cooperate? These questions are offered as a means of introduction to a study which at its core is lifting up the stories of clergy. The passion the co-researchers bring to their ministries, and their growth in love of self, others and God across the twists and turns of their spiritual journeys, is inspiring, and has much for the reader to consider and reflect upon for one’s own life. Chapter 2 and 3 explore the conceptual framework surrounding this study. Attention is given to both theological and theoretical ways of thinking about what can be learned from the clergypersons’ stories. Chapter 4 outlines the core procedures used in phenomenological analysis and gives specific information regarding such matters as recruitment of co-researchers, documentation provided and the structure of the interview process. In Chapter 5 the co-researchers are introduced and resultant themes and structures of the experience of spiritual journey are discussed. Examples from the co-researcher’s stories are provided. In Chapter 6 a summary of the research findings is provided, and hypotheses are reviewed. Implications from the research findings are discussed as it is relative to the support of clergy in active ministry."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860297195716608,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:43.008Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0e44e024-cdb0-4b93-b89a-dcb32297df62","accessControl_ssim":["cb890245-e0e4-423d-9325-0af2e14f2f4c"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Revitalizing the church for a new day: identity, purpose, and theology"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:38Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6eeb0b07-80b5-4ec3-bf9c-d95248ee3882"],"hasLease_ssim":["47a211f6-6564-47dc-8c7a-03cf10d953f5"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Some congregations want to maintain the status quo and dwell in survival mode, while other churches are imagining new possibilities for their ministry. Denominations are faced with these same issues and now must make some decisions regarding their future. Revitalizing the Church for a New Day: Identity, Purpose, and Theology provides hope for the local church and denominations as we discern the new thing that God is doing in our midst. After reading books and visiting churches during a three-month sabbatical, a survey was designed for churches to use as they wrestle with these issues. I administered this survey with about a dozen congregations and then met with them in a follow-up discussion. Following my interviews with these congregations and going through my own transition in ministry, I discovered that denominations and local churches must focus on three aspects of vitality. Mainline denominations do not have a clear identity, which has trickled down to the local church. Furthermore, we have traded theology for marketing and advertising. The research revealed that our denominations are in decline because congregational leaders are not equipped to discern their identity, purpose, and theology of ministry. The survey used in this research will help the basic unit of witness, the local church, revitalize and prepare for the congregation’s bright and hopeful future."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860297365585920,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:43.170Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4d23dfd4-a161-4f0f-b4b9-7ead15672844","accessControl_ssim":["48c8cf7a-6231-42f6-bc16-da531f7248df"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Talk about change. Instrumental to this goal would be to develop, design, implement, and evaluate this resource. The project began with the research and construction of a biblical-theological rationale and suggested means of self-care. Primary resources for this research included Holy Scripture and the writings of Paul Tournier, especially The Adventure of Living, The Strong and the Weak, and The Whole Person in a Broken World. The biblical-theological rationale and suggested means of self care form the content of Chapter 1. Chapter 2 contains the design of the Christian Education experience (a one-day retreat and follow-up meeting) and the design of the evaluation of the effectiveness of the retreat. Chapter 3 provides a description of the pilot-test retreat and follow-up meeting held in the spring of 1990 including the participants’ contributions. Chapter 4 contains data for evaluation of the retreat design and experience. Chapter 5 provides evaluation of the achievement of objectives, evaluation of the retreat design and conduct, evaluation of the evaluation design and instruments, and a revised design for the retreat and follow-up meeting. Correspondingly, do they rate the segments of sermons which were written to their inferior function as “speaking least specifically” to them? If the preliminary evidence suggests an affirmative answer to this question, then: (2) How successful can one preacher, who has one dominant function, be in crafting four different segments of the same sermon to speak to groups with each of the four dominant functions…Two converging arenas, that of a professional pastor, and that of an MBTI professional, intersect with this project…People who come to church are different in the ways they perceive and make judgments. As a result of this, communication becomes an issue. By making the basic assumption that the MBTI is an effective instrument in typing how people perceive and make judgments, it would seem also that communications can be designed to communicate to people more effectively by type. A minister who crafts his or her sermon according to type will have the ability to communicate more effectively than one who does not–that is the underlying presupposition in this project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860289444642816,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:35.616Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2d61f6a6-cdbc-4adf-b6a3-84acd72eaaf5","accessControl_ssim":["34e9883f-eb6a-4583-b9ad-2b7ecb2663fd"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Exploring the balance that makes room in the church for children and the child in all of us"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["3addc0af-0586-4e59-ad50-c1d4185720b5"],"hasLease_ssim":["7bc33c64-d6d0-4a82-89f9-1c8387660b4d"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Not only is the intent to help persons understand the value of possessing this kind of faith, it is to provide specifics as to how to go about doing this. To that end, this pastoral-theological essay establishes a scriptural basis for lifting up the importance of possessing a childlike spirit within the context of a mature and growing faith. A congregational assessment tool and process have been designed to help persons identify areas in the life of their church where such a spirit is alive and well and where it is not. Finally, concrete suggestions and examples are provided to enable persons and churches to embrace, set free, or bring to life for the first time, the childlike spirit to which all have access but which, for a variety of reasons, is not allowed to play a significant role in daily living."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860289092321280,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:35.279Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:31Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:34Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d34b2b6a-ba51-476d-8db8-5b4af27cba2e","accessControl_ssim":["def68457-69f9-42e2-94d1-41a859a557aa"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["An evaluation of the breakthrough in the 80’s financial stewardship program of the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["125e840e-4149-4bfb-92e2-8e953e226d49"],"hasLease_ssim":["97f453da-af72-4367-86dd-f57a3a140062"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The intent of that program was to help local churches obtain, from their members, more money for the ministry and mission of the Church. The purpose of this paper is to evaluate the Breakthrough in the 80’s Program. The first task will be to offer an overview of the development of stewardship as a key theological concept. Secondly will be presented a brief historical sketch of the UCC churches in the Conference, tracing their origin to the German people who first came to the shores of North America in the seventeenth century. Next will be offered a description of the program itself, including its original purposes, its evolution over the decade it was offered, and a listing of the resources used. The evaluation of the Breakthrough Program will be presented in an objective and subjective manner. The numbers and statistics will present the facts of the program’s effectiveness, while the insights gained from the subjective evaluation will offer learnings that often speak louder than mere figures. The final section of this paper will offer overall conclusions reached about the success of the Breakthrough Program as well as render insights that could prove helpful for anyone else endeavoring to construct and implement a similar program in the future."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860289609269248,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:35.773Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:30Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:33Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8b45b031-266c-4874-aa97-019c5d27b59a","accessControl_ssim":["3a13e4d7-aecb-43b4-9fa3-9c56e165ff73"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Ministry with the frail elderly"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:29Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["a0becd4b-801a-4c35-9016-e3499c6891f7"],"hasLease_ssim":["4da51c6b-a7f5-4675-a416-d401ac365470"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. (See Appendix K) The study of ministry with the frail elderly represents my continuing concern about the specific and unique needs of this group of individuals. The study is a pastoral essay about serious societal problems regarding the care of the frail elderly and a plea for church congregations to assist in solving the problems. The Ministry with the Frail Elderly (FEM) Study reflects concerns that are both prophetic and priestly. The study prophesies that the problems of ministry with the frail elderly are systemic in nature and that the magnitude of the problems will continue to grow. Relevant literature and demographics are used to convey the particulars of the problem. Secondly, this study suggests strategies and models for congregations to use to identify, nurture, and assist frail elderly…The purpose of the FEM study design is to describe the circumstances of ministry with the frail elderly by demographic statistics, by medical and health literature, and by interviews with pastors, health care staff, and the frail elderly themselves. Geographic limits are established for interviews to York County, Pennsylvania, the location of this researcher’s parish. Pastors who are responsive to these approaches are often soon faced with a set of fundamental questions, such as these: How much and what type of counseling should the pastor provide? Should it be limited to support, to pastoral care? Might it include teaching as well as support? Under what circumstances might it involve counseling in the more formal sense of the term, or, even more intensively for the adequately prepared pastor, therapy? When might any of these be better carried out in a group setting, as opposed to one on one? Moreover, implicitly if not out in the open, there are questions of the church’s involvement in the ministry of counseling: Is it a conscious mission of the particular congregation to provide its pastor to persons or groups as a counselor? Is it appropriate for its pastor to be devoting significant amounts of time to such a ministry? Is the church setting even a proper place for counseling–or, more intensively, therapy–to be conducted? This report could be called a descriptive study or “case study.” It tells the story of a pastor, and a congregation group of parishioners and non-parishioners as a particular group counseling program in the local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860281225904128,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:27.778Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:27Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f29c8cdd-625b-44aa-8651-63d813fe6b73","accessControl_ssim":["e8374a50-f8f1-4b2a-9647-a7c4a44e9db5"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["Pastoral and social ministry: Creative tension in a local church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:23Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:23Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["6577ca6b-8971-4c5a-bf55-05950523adac"],"hasLease_ssim":["a4ebac72-71d0-4382-baf6-54ac38e13922"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1993"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Is it possible to live creatively within this tension? This is the question this project explores. The first chapter looks at this tension as it is experienced in a particular church by one pastor. Hopefully the reader will be able to identify with this experience in his or her own ministry setting. Next the project looks at three contemporary models of social ministry in a pastoral context. Chapter two offers the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., the Rev. Dr. Paul Sherry, President of the United Church of Christ, and Dorothy Day, founder of the Catholic Worker, as these models. The third chapter offers a theological foundation to support ministry that balances the pastoral and social. Juergen Moltman is the primary reference for this theological exploration. The final chapter includes a variety of ways the creative tension of social and pastoral ministry can be lived out in the local church. The project concludes that social ministry can creatively stimulate pastoral ministry. Effective pastoral ministry creates new possibilities for social responsibility."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860281352781824,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:27.899Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:23Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:10Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"34d4159a-830e-42af-8555-35c700dc35ca","accessControl_ssim":["ba002e66-423d-4353-9f26-25904101561f"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A description of significant factors contributing to or detracting from long-tenured pastorates in multiple point charges in the Central Pennsylvania Conference of the United Methodist Church: A dissertation submitted to the faculty in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of Ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:22Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T18:44:10Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["c4ea8a73-9fad-45c7-b48a-5b36f86fb91b"],"hasLease_ssim":["3f3f5d05-a5d6-47fe-8685-d1379109e1cf"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"additional_rights_info_tesim":["Donald Freeman"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1990"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
