Using a shared leadership model and tools of appreciative inquiry, the pastor-researcher encouraged the LDT to identify gaps in the church’s leadership system and brainstorm and implement possible solutions. The intervention took place during the 2019-2020 program year and was, therefore, affected by the unanticipated challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic and the pastor-researcher’s move to a different church. This allowed the pastor-researcher to observe the LDT’s shift in mindset and methods under the pressure of these circumstances. The pastor-researcher observed the LDT’s process and outcomes and evaluated the members’ self-reported experiences via questionnaire, group interviews, and meeting transcripts. The key findings of the study illustrated that the LDT members experienced their process favorably, especially as evidenced by adopting the collaborative and systemic approaches they experienced in the intervention and applying these approaches to their work with other church leaders. Additionally, the study found that LDT members reported reduced anxiousness in their tasks, increased confidence in their effectiveness, and strong commitment to their shift in mindset, even in the face of the unanticipated crises. Most LDT members attributed these positive experiences to aspects of the intervention, including shared purpose, understanding of the church leadership system, collaborative leadership, and relationship with the pastor-researcher. The pastor-researcher identified opportunity for further study regarding long-term effects of such interventions and the impacts of interpersonal relationships, particularly with the pastor, on the experience and process of church leadership development."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.proquest.com/pqdtglobal/docview/2544234554"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["fc8e637d-6b92-421f-936e-4844dc981265"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791134682112327680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:39:03.555Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T06:45:47Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8bb6a4b8-24f8-4de4-bedb-8cacd2bf663a","accessControl_ssim":["554284dd-e087-49c1-ba42-e969346782fc"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Love to Tell the Story: The Benefits of Engaging with a Church's History to Strengthen Its Identity for the Present and Future"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:13:49Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["81559638-d641-428f-9897-6ac55248aa56"],"hasLease_ssim":["8c691f43-ff0f-4ce7-9b09-e857ded7d448"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Campbell University Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Barry Jones Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"location_tesim":["United States","North Carolina"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Football chaplains face a number of challenges in winning players to Christ. College football is a distinct subculture. Big time programs are increasingly popular, providing teenage athletes with national notoriety. The rosters are large, and the schedules are busy. The game is violent, and the culture is competitive. This segment of the population is unique and requires a contextualized evangelistic approach. Evangelism is at the heart of the church’s mission to make disciples. Therefore, this issue is crucial for fruitful chaplaincy. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with ten chaplains who served their programs for ten years or longer. These men are either employees of their university, work for parachurch organizations, or serve as local pastors. The literature review and analysis of the ten interviews focused on three key areas to understand in impactful chaplaincy: a biblical understanding of contextualization, sports as religion, and locker room culture. This study concluded that three components combine in evangelizing college football players: intentional trust building, simple and sensible ways to present the gospel of grace, and a structured ministry funnel. Related to these three components, this study found that veteran chaplains face three major challenges to evangelism: a distorted view of manhood, the performance mindset, and scheduling constraints. To address these challenges, this study identified the motivations and practices which contribute to developing a fruitful evangelistic movement."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["https://www.covenantlibrary.org/etd/2020/Weber_Benjamin_DMin_2020.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131098689830912,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:06.137Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:44:45Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a1b6fb46-0ba2-4646-96a1-7756089cf602","accessControl_ssim":["6aa3c95d-0eec-47dd-8932-ff6a7732ab6b"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Love and longing in 1 Thessalonians 2:17-3:13: expanding Robert Funk's exclusive-authority view of the apostolic parousia"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:50:48Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["79ad6fb9-089d-4f0d-8734-206d992a72b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["0d44cfe3-e19c-4b6c-8912-f2b10acd8a8a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["David Chapman"],"year_tesim":["2019"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Smith, Cary"],"keyword_tesim":["Pauline theology"],"subject_tesim":["Bible. Funk argued that such material manifests the apostle’s presence within the letter, exclusively seeking to convey Paul’s apostolic authority and power to the readers. Funk’s essay and proposal have significantly impacted NT studies and continue to influence scholarly discourse. While affirming much of Funk’s proposal, this thesis offers an expanded perspective of the apostolic parousia convention that corrects an unnecessarily restrictive view of its literary function. The study examines 1 Thess 2:17-3:13 and demonstrates that Paul literarily manifests his presence in that passage primarily to convey personal affection and a desire to see the readers. The first part of the argument focuses on 1 Thessalonians as a whole and establishes that expressions of affection and affirmation as well as Paul’s minimization of authority characterize the entire letter, particularly the first three chapters. Such factors indicate no need for the apostle to emphasize his authority in the apostolic parousia section. An exegetical examination of 1 Thess 2:17-3:13 then demonstrates that Paul seeks to convey love and longing more than authority in this section. The evidence confirms that 1 Thess 2:17-3:13 does not function exclusively or primarily to convey Paul’s authority and power, as Funk’s unqualified approach suggests. Pauline studies will consequently benefit from clear qualifications about the limits of Funk’s work in this area and also from further exploration and clarification of the multiple functions apostolic parousia passages exhibit in the apostle’s letters."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2019/Smith_Cary_ThM_2019.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131268635688960,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:44:48.210Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:04:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"656af596-8f09-4017-9305-f7c3f6948f07","accessControl_ssim":["2417bcff-57c6-431b-9996-da843ca1e2bf"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Discernment in the Life of the Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T01:05:56Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["36ec818f-9e24-46ee-be3e-ad22572c8ee8"],"hasLease_ssim":["22975a98-8a2a-42b6-a8c8-f1a10484e5be"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Campbell University Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Derek Hogan Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2020"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Preaching in particular, as a central function of the church, plays a significant mitigating role. The purpose of this study is to explore how senior pastors preach Christ-centered sermons to lower anxiety in congregational systems. The literature review focuses on four key areas: Jesus’ teaching on anxiety in Luke 12, anxiety in family systems perspective, the experience of anxiety in the person, and modern sources of anxiety. This study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight pastors who have served congregations for five years or longer in the role of senior pastor. Four research questions guided this qualitative study: 1. How do senior pastors describe the presence of anxiety in the congregational system? 2. How do senior pastors understand the impact of their presence on anxiety in the congregational system? 3. How do senior pastors negotiate their own anxiety as a part of the congregational system? 4. How do senior pastors describe sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system? The findings of this study reveal four components required to preach Christ-centered sermons that lower anxiety in the congregational system: discerning systemic realities of the congregation, practicing a non-anxious presence, shaping interpretive frameworks, and communicating in a manner that is challenging yet not coercive. Several practices and attitudes are suggested that best contribute to preaching in a manner that lowers anxiety in the congregational system."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2020/Williams_Roger_DMin_2020.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130480599367680,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:32:16.680Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:22Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:20:36Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"4ca58141-bc6c-4a15-b290-61528a41782d","accessControl_ssim":["9f22a321-54a0-4fef-8d9e-6c9b7da57144"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Effect of a Wilderness Program Upon Identity Understanding and Spiritual Formation in Young Millennials"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:21Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T00:23:09Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e864e4c8-39e6-4f4a-951e-a82de7a3000f"],"hasLease_ssim":["41222916-598d-4139-9fc3-883411215df7"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marchall Shelley Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The project the study focuses on took place in Big Bend National Park in 2020. The author looks closely at the Biblical record and uses four primary examples as case studies. _Special attention is given to generational theory, nature deficit disorder, and digital nativity. The author looks at the complex issues and difficulties that Young Millennials face in growing as spiritual leaders, and he explores how a wilderness program with a solo component can address those issues and help to bridge the generation gap between Young Millennials and former generations. _This is a qualitive study that relies highly on interviews, journals, surveys andreflections from person experience. These Associations have been criticized over time for being reduced to administrative bodies that provide little in the way of practical ministry support to the local church. CBOQ discussions about finding a more organic means to associate together (without requiring an official “Association”), prompted this research into fresh expressions of inter-church partnership. This research portfolio will include surveyed pastors and congregants across the sixteen CBOQ churches in the Oxford-Brant Association to determine the specific role that belonging to an Association played in the pursuit of their respective ministry plans. Once that data was collected and analyzed, a focus group was formed to examine the survey results and to provide insights on the idea of inter-church associating itself. The intent was to galvanize interest in fresh or renewed expressions of inter-church relationship among CBOQ churches."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133739540021248,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:24:04.648Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:17:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb49ba0c-f19d-4adf-96db-3243bc99bc8e","accessControl_ssim":["af9ba7af-2675-4f23-a631-14e53552bd73"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Initial Formation for Interculturality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:31:17Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["fa95f6a6-1480-4501-9a1b-124b71431958"],"hasLease_ssim":["0629aed1-f909-489b-b627-0c38be03bbee"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Theology"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"advisor_tesim":["Roger Schroeder SVD Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The purpose of it was to test to what extent interculturality is vital and essential to the Dehonian charism, and how it can be effectively implemented within Priests of the Sacred Heart initial formation in the United States. Because this project deals with experience, culture, and tradition, the author has decided to employ the method of practical theology of James and Evelyn Whitehead. The Whiteheads’ method encourages reflection upon these three elements of life, experience, culture, and tradition, and brings them into correlation to the moment of implementation. The result of this profound reflection and discernment emerges in a pastoral response. Consequently, the three elements, the experience of the members of the US Province, culture, and the tradition evolved in the Dehonian heritage, brought to correlation have emerged in some practical remarks and resolutions regarding initial formation as a pastoral response."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Catholic Theological Union"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["b51273d2-7ff5-4ecb-af24-64508c2367ad"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791129523652132864,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:17:04.064Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:21Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:22:28Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"8586a655-ad63-4d49-aad4-acc64d74c0dd","accessControl_ssim":["2686648b-8db3-4146-9715-b0644490e865"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Exploring the Key Elements of Southland's Church Renewal Mentorship Model for Adaptation into Mentorship Model Practices with the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada."],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:14:20Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:03:57Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ff935791-98ba-42c3-8071-b859052f26ac"],"hasLease_ssim":["4f3cde3f-e115-4136-a01c-d8f263f85e11"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Tyndale University"],"advisor_tesim":["Thornton, William"],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["Ontario"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. As a pastor in the EMCC, I was given permission to explore pastors’ experiences of mentorship and how their mentorship experiences through Southland had positively or negatively influenced their development. This exploration was accomplished through a series of interviews with those who had completed a portion of Southland Church’s mentorship model. Throughout this portfolio I shared my own leadership experience and journey, incorporating my philosophy of ministry in regards to mentorship. The experiences of these pastors were collected through interviews, in order to assess the outcomes of this mentorship model. Interview data was coded and analyzed for similarities between pastors. A set of recommendations and best practices for the EMCC was developed from the research, and shared with an expert panel that included denominational leaders. The interactions of the expert panel identified outcomes and conclusions for this portfolio. The recommendations focused on accountability in mentorship, cohort-based learning, and clear parameters for the mentoring relationship. The discussion of these outcomes led to the creation of a model of local church leader mentoring that was based on the identified values of mentorship by the expert panel, and will become the framework for my role in developing leaders at my local church."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Tyndale University"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["602e7e7c-0b8b-4e09-af87-84c66ff49c48"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133641701588992,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:22:31.342Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
