The aim of this thesis is to analyze the history of interpretation on Romans 13:1-7, and then to provide a fresh interpretation of it, with interaction from modern commentaries. Some key questions about Romans 13:1-7 have arisen over the centuries: (1) To whom does Paul refer when he talks about the “governing authorities”?; (2) Whose judgment does Paul reference in vs. 2? Is God the judge in view, or is it the governing authorities?; (3) Does Paul condone capital punishment in vs. 4, where he references the sword?; (4) Does “wrath” refer to eternal condemnation, or temporal punishment in vs. 4?; (5) What does Paul mean by referring to the governing authorities as “God’s servants” and “ministers of God”? Is he putting them on a par with ecclesiastical authorities?; (6) Is this passage supposed to be understood as a universal rule for the Church throughout history, or was it intended to be guidance for the Christians in Rome around A.D. 55? After a concise introduction, there is a detailed annotated translation of Romans 13:1-7, which provides insight into the translational and interpretive decisions made by the author. After a general introduction in Chapter 1, then Chapters 2-4 present an analysis of some key figures in the history of interpretation from the Early Church to the Reformation. Specifically, we examine commentaries and sermons written by Origen, John Chrysostom, Augustine, Peter Abelard, William of St. Thierry, Nicholas of Lyra, Martin Luther, and John Calvin. Chapter 5 is devoted to a new examination of Romans 13:1-7 by the present author and modern commentaries are consulted throughout to provide an accurate interpretation of the passage."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"related_url_tesim":["http://covenantlibrary.org/etd/2018/Schmalhofer_Travis_MAET_2018.pdf"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e57e5218-1d34-47f5-b1a5-b84efbc9e61f"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131051511250944,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:41:21.144Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:11Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-11T12:38:14Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"7f5f3e47-60f3-4032-83b6-00d548a4ec8a","accessControl_ssim":["b3ca5e70-7e9b-43cf-9dad-3063f70ed13c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Factores Clave Para La Revitalización Espiritual Y Numérica De Las Iglesias Bautistas Hispanas En El Condado De Dallas"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:10:10Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-11T12:38:14Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["788624f5-f5b6-4446-a74b-ac3c0900af1d"],"hasLease_ssim":["9e7a321e-abf9-4f0b-a064-205c8919bb6e"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Carlos C. This study took place in Ethiopia and explored the perceptions of the Ethiopian Kale Heywet Church (EKHC) leaders’ advice to ensure a biblically based and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategy in the EKHC head office regarding predecessors and successors. It attempted to answer what these leaders perceive will ensure biblically and contextually appropriate leadership transition strategies. The study used the qualitative research design of in-depth interviews with twenty respondents (10 predecessors and 10 successors) who were purposefully selected from EKHC leadership constituents. The findings showed that the following aspects are vital for the smooth leadership transitions within the EKHC Head Office: (1) succession plan, (2) developing potential or tomorrow’s leaders through mentoring and coaching, (3) an attitude of Christlike humility, (4) election season events, (5) discipleship, (6) appreciative culture, and (7) relationship gaps.Furthermore, based on the findings, implications were found for practical application in smoothening leadership transitions: (1) introducing and developing a succession plan, (2) developing leaders through mentoring and coaching, (3) building an attitude of Christlike humility in predecessors and successors, (4) improving election season events, (5) cultivating discipleship in the lives of leaders, (6) nurturing an appreciative culture, and (7) building relationship in order to make leadership transitions healthy."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130560250249216,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:33:32.641Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:37:32Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b0db6414-52ef-4333-b0c7-536a96c6f240","accessControl_ssim":["995be376-4e47-4656-b1aa-f0554ceacfff"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Train up a Parent in the Way they should Go: Parenting Preparation for Today's Society"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:14:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["359cc25c-bb08-4c23-a79d-0c864d1cf7b7"],"hasLease_ssim":["1030bb8a-c2f7-4c87-9a85-b98c8ad43e1c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Philip F. The short answer? There are many factors that contribute, but our family background is one of the largest contributions. Just as Proverbs 22:6 is true: “Train up a child in the way he should go, even when he is old, he will not depart from it,” the opposite would be true as well: Do not train up a child, and they will depart from “it”. What is “it”? “It” equals habits of godliness, wisdom, truth, fear of the Lord, and sanctification that comes from the training received from godly parents which extends to the next generation. Our mission to train up a child would be in jeopardy of the mandate that Solomon sets forth, if we did not train up a parent in the way they should go.Training is at the heart of this research project. Because there are many individuals who are about to be parents that do not pursue biblical parenting education training before they become parents, a conscious effort to strive to bridge our past with the present and create a bright future for our children, our family, and the generations that follow is integral to the success of parenting. If the concern for strong biblical parenting education is important, believers should be as adamant in pursuing this preparation as much as they are in beginning a biblical marriage with the right steps. Biblical marriages usually begin by the couple taking the time to pursue every avenue of preparation and advice that there is available. But that does not seem to be the case for the role of parenting. There appears to be a large deficit of understanding in the value of pursuing every avenue of preparation and advice available for this vital beginning of parenting. For some reason, the need is not there. It is quite puzzling and disheartening to know that this deficit exists when there is deep importance to this job.The research examined uses a hermeneutical phenomenological approach in the form of personal and group interviews, conversations with student parents of my elementary and secondary classes, and a university essay question from my university students. It was the goal of this project to create a plan of action that can be implemented to begin the journey of parenting with our aim fully on the target moving from working through one’s family background, to the success and the health of our marriage, to the implementation of a strong family unit. Let us train up a parent in the way they should go."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130814869667840,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:37:35.465Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:39:52Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"ccd2d0d7-5444-41fc-9d32-5cd071bc997a","accessControl_ssim":["42112f5b-8f1c-4439-a6a9-0ed8644f9480"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["The Origin and Development of Christianity on St. Helena Island, South Carolina amongst the Gullah People"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:00:47Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["03787feb-212e-42ac-85e3-20cd43188239"],"hasLease_ssim":["eca69822-fbcc-48a5-aa4e-cabaddfbbc12"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Educational Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Leonard Small Ph.D.","Michael S. The Book of Ruth served as a biblico-historical lens to help analyze the participants’ experiences with immigration as believers in Christ, and to answer three main research questions: (1) Are immigrant Christian women aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth? (2) What common experiences do these immigrant Christian women share? (3) How does their faith in God inform their experience with immigration? To collect data, in-depth interviews were conducted and recorded using a phenomenological approach with twelve self-identified evangelical Christian immigrant women. Data analysis revealed that only two participants are aware of the connection their experience with immigration has with the book of Ruth, albeit the connections these participants drew vary in focus and interpretation. Regarding common experiences, participants reported experiencing a sense of loss not only of culture, family, and identity, but also of their marriages and loved ones. In many instances, experiencing loss in their lives led them to develop a deeper understanding of God’s attributes such as His power, care, protection, and forgiveness. Data also revealed that when facing hardship, most participants were able to bounce back and become somewhat resilient. An unexpected finding, however, was that almost half of the participants mentioned experiences with abuse typically, but not always, perpetrated by male figures. Data also showed that participants’ experience with immigration seem to be informed by their respective theological traditions. Implications of this study are that there is a need for better pastoral care for immigrants to help both men and women to deal with their stories of trauma and abuse, and the Book of Ruth can be an instrument to help address these needs."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Dallas Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["8322f611-a593-413a-8bcd-0011fba52dc7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791131131149549568,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:42:37.093Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:39Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:18:09Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"2935e466-52d8-4e3f-86c6-773256419eb7","accessControl_ssim":["02fdeb5a-05cf-4140-bf33-fc7d43c75a20"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["A Phenomenology of Practicing Dignified Dialogue on Denver Seminary Students' Perceptions of Biblical Mutuality"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:38Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:20:12Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["db4d9766-c157-4c6a-ab73-625ff64fe618"],"hasLease_ssim":["e5e8adf5-2454-4a2f-9abd-db8a260ca535"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Leadership in Ministry"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Denver Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Marshall Shelley D.Min."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The goal was to explore the role, significance, and potential value of practicing dignified dialogue with other Christians as a way to negotiate divergent theological perspectives in order to determine, in part, how the exchange of ideas via dialogue might broaden understanding and even rightfully further consideration of the subject. A phenomenological research method was employed to discover the lived experiences of Denver Seminary students who practiced dignified dialogue in group studies around the topic of biblical mutuality for ten weeks. Participants’ collective experiences revealed that though participating in dignified dialogue was a difficult, thought-provoking, and tumultuous practice, it was a necessary skill to further develop as it is an essential component of shared humanity . The study affirmed the importance of dignified dialogue as a way to navigate conflict among Christians for the purpose of growing in Christlikeness, modeling unity among diversity, and sharing God’s reconciling love with a broken world."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Denver Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["e7af129f-938f-4821-9463-dc6ded35d563"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791133371019034624,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T08:18:13.198Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:09Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:12:42Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"bb1589ba-f40b-472e-9ea9-5af5bd57c52c","accessControl_ssim":["c29d8011-e799-49cd-8eef-0731a6b3ddba"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Place Forming Pastor"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T19:09:08Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T03:30:53Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["e0aa946a-29dd-43be-9e7a-80bf26b5eadc"],"hasLease_ssim":["7e3a1d6e-1dc0-440f-9be8-08b886385e32"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Doctor of Ministry"],"discipline_tesim":["Christian Spirituality"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Columbia Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Christine Hong Ph.D.","Jacob Myers Ph.D."],"year_tesim":["2021"],"location_tesim":["United States"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
