Psychological assessment, sociological perspective, and theological analysis are necessary to an understanding of the spirituality of African American males and their relationships to churches. Masculinity issues and anger are primary psychological factors. Societal definitions of masculinity, institutions of male socialization, and work's relationship to self-esteem are crucial sociological influences. The role of the church, anthropomorphisms in relation to images of evil, the earthly father image in relation to the heavenly father image, and the contrast of the Nation of Islam with Christian churches offer essential theological insight. It examines the life of the people of Israel during the Babylonian Exile for clues as to how we are to do ministry and how we are to live a life of faith in 'exilic' times. In examining the Babylonian Exile the project discovers the importance of rituals. The workshop involved a diverse group of professionals from a wide range of disciplines and specialties on the campus of the Baptist Health System's Montclair Hospital. Intercessory prayer is necessary tool for wholistic health care because it connects people and enables them to 'touch' one another. Although prayers come in many different forms and often have surprising results, prayer is intended to be integrated with relationships. The church has participated in and is living through a major cultural shift.  In this context this project examines the cultural shift and the generation that has come to exemplify this shift: the 'baby boomers' born between the 1946 and 1964. A similar time of anxiety and discontinuity is found in the Gospel of Matthew.  The project examines two texts that illustrate Matthew's Christology and ecclesiology--the 'Great Commission' and the Beatitudes from the 'Sermon on the Mount,' Matthew 28:19-20 and 5:1-16--and compares them to find understanding and identity for mainline denominationalism. This project identifies certain stresses that precipitate burnout within Pentecostal churches.  Theological and empirical data lead to the conclusion that certain modalities have been established within the ministry and church that are counterintuitive to the physical and spiritual welfare of the pastor. In the context of religious adherence among Costa Rica's 1994 adult population, the project analyzes Protestant desertion rates for 1989, 1991, and 1994.  The projects offers reasons why former Protesants have deserted Protestant churches in Costa Rica. These reasons are related to differences observed in the three church categories used for this study (that is, churches distinguished by higher and lower attrition rates and by more mobility); in the areas of evangelism (message and method) and discipleship (including church discipline and congregational life).
