The author uses a variety of approaches to reflect the conflict and confusion which often accompanies change in a church setting.  In looking to the future, this paper outlines approaches to getting the congregation on track for the future. Twelve participants were selected from the South English Street Church of Christ (Greensboro, North Carolina). It met for eight weeks reading and discussing material dealing with racism, Black rage, Christian spirituality, leadership, the Black church, and White Christianity.  The group experienced increased understanding of the spiritual and social ills afflicting Black men.  The participants felt closer to one another and spiritually stronger. This practicum/project proposes that by exploring varied forms of prayer persons can deepen their relationships with God.  The practicum/project was conducted in two retreat settings.  The format of the retreats included discussion followed by opportunities for personal prayer.  Four prayer experiences were offered. This practicum/project has indicated that there can be a positive relationship between exploring new forms of prayer and enhancing one's relationship with God. The author researched the art of preaching as performed by clergy in the academic world and local church pulpit.  The communication skills learned were applied to three sermons which were discussed by the task force.  Following evaluation, the author synthesized those elements that engage the interest of this congregation. The practicum was developed over a twelve-week period of time.  This is an intensive laity involvement project.  Three committees of twenty lay people from Christ Church Dallas became involved in examining a national corporation whose AIDS program was a benefit to the community, helping HIV/AIDS victims through AIDS Interfaith, Inc, and working directly with an emergency shelter for abused and runaway teenagers. Although the main goal was to develop a theology of social responsibility, the laity and minister became actively committed to a ministry of compassion dealing with local injustices. The Church is of God and will never disappear, and it is because we believe this that we have conducted this project in the hope of bringing about change among those of us called Christian beginning with an annual conference of the United Methodist Church.  The practicum was conducted over a 12-week period of time.  Two groups, one made up of female clergy and one made up of male clergy, were recruited from an annual conference and asked to meet as consciousness-raising groups using the book Women's Growth in Connection.  The emphasis of the groups was to focus on justice issues between male/female clergy using their own experience and calling forth their hopes for and commitment to change.
