The practicum examines the issues of school dropout.  Additionally, it examines the role of the community and church in their impact on the prevention of the issue of school dropouts.  The practicum was conducted over a six-week period of time.  A group of ten laypersons was recruited from Porter Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal Church in Dallas, Texas.  The group met each Saturday during the six-week period to discuss practical and theological positions for meeting needs in the South Dallas community.  The main goal was to explore concrete ways the church could work in the community to aid in the school dropout problem.  The group decided to offer a tutorial program to address the academic needs of the student. The group also decided to address issues of spiritual formation with the student. It utilized the gathering of demographic information to identify cultural lifestyles present in a congregation and community.  Unexpected results necessitated a closer examination of the data. Possible reasons for the discrepancies were considered. After examining the data, focus groups were organized from within the congregation to critique and participate in planning worship.  The project revealed serious questions concerning cultural lifestyle theory. The setting for the research done to complete the project was in smaller churches with school enrollments of less than 300.  The practicum was conducted over a five-month period.  A survey was constructed for students eight to eleven years old with questions concerning Bible knowledge and spirituality. Teachers were also surveyed to determine their satisfaction with the current curriculum. Eighty students were placed in tutoring situations in public schools in Cincinnati, Ohio.  They tutored grade-school students for two hours or more a week for 12 weeks.  The three months of contact did not improve racial attitudes because the students already had good attitudes. Dr John Savage's program on Calling and Caring Ministries is used as the method for training, calling preparation, and on-going support.  In-depth listening skills are taught to participants as the primary means of addressing the needs of inactive members.  Listening skills training precedes the calling phase of the practicum/project and both the training and calling give participants experience in reaching church drop-outs.  The practicum was conducted over a six-month period of time.  The pastor attended two training events, a group of nine lay persons was recruited, lay training and calling experiences were evaluated.  The practicum revealed the importance of pastoral and lay training in preparation for calling on inactive members. Recognizing the early signs of inactivity and making an immediate, caring response will reduce the number of church drop-outs. The hypothesis stated that experientially driven curriculum would significantly enrich families to a greater degree than would educationally based curriculum.  Quantitative results were measured through the Family Life Inventory (a forty-item questionnaire representing eight areas of healthy family fun ctioning).  Qualitative results were gathered through written evaluations and participatory observation. Will a course which teaches the foundational truths of Christianity, appeals to their culture, and suits their present environment help them?  An introductory course was tested with a group of Chinese migrants in Australia. Written quizzes, questionnaires, and interviews would indicate that participants understood the fundamental truths taught, and showed interest in studying the Bible and knowing Jesus personally.  The thesis has two major underlying principles.  Evangelism and discipleship should not be separated. The lack of a clearly defined vision statement by Christian leaders is a major contributing factor to plateaued or dying churches.  A clear statement of vision provides a ministry with greater direction, unity, relevance, motivation, financial support, and valid education.  Will a 3-month small group study using Malphurs's steps for building vision produce a clear and unified vision of ministry among the leadership of Warren Community Fellowship, as determined by using a pretest and posttest vehicle of measurement?  Warren Community Fellowhship is a 5-year old, suburban, non-denominational community church with an average attendance of 400.
