The formative connectional Methodist elements, primarily the Class-Meeting, along with the connectional itinerants, societies and conferences are re-formed and articulated for the third millennium.  Surveys of bishops and clergy revealed the desire for re-establishing the Class-Meeting as a formative institution within the church along with a reformulation of a Wesley-style Conference, inclusive of clergy and laity. A research questionnaire was designed and sent to seventy-six chaplains in schools with a religious affiliation. Fifty-one were returned.  Statistics and comments were derived from this survey and from contacts with school chaplains in England and the United States.  A plan for chaplaincy in an independent school or college is proposed. The project proposes that the chaplaincy would be greatly strengthened by doctoral studies in pastoral counseling. Included are the family systems theories of Bowen and Friedman, McGoldrick and Walters' feminist critiques, Aristotle's definition of friendship, Buber's I-Thou theory of relationships, a survey of presbytery leaders, and interviews with pastors successful and unsuccessful in defining, establishing, and maintaining Christian friendship. The prayer styles reflected the functions of the Myers-Briggs Type Indicator.  In 73 percent of the cases, participants found a prayer style they preferred.  Levels of comfort, a sense of God's presence, and the style's similarity to prayer patterns utilized prior to the study were the strongest determinants of preference.  The author concludes that teaching people a variety of prayer styles is beneficial to spiritual growth. The method was to survey 100 indivduals using the Lawrence Image of God Inventory.  The two targeted groups were blacks born in America and blacks born in the West Indies.  The results of this study showed young people between the ages of 11 and 19 more accepting to the gospel message, scoring highest on the Presence and Acceptance scales.  It also showed baby boomers in their 40s accepting when given a chance to discuss and dialog. Methods used include the examination of works discussing a foundational understanding of prayer, the analysis of prayer collections, daily journaling, interviews with those who pray, analysis of prayers drafted for corporate worship, and the assessment of this study's learning goals and of the theological dimensions uncovered. The primary thesis is that a theology of modern Christian clowning can be constructed on four theological pillars: folly, silence, paradox, and deconstruction.  A wide variety of biblical, monastic, medieval, and post-modern sources were consulted. It combines a research and materials model. Alexander Campbell's theological anthropology and soteriology are researched, and then that material is refashioned into a manual on spiritual formation based on the gospel ordinances.
