The project involved a series of workshops that taught people a variety of spiritual exercises and the biblical/theological foundations for spiritual gifts; provided definitions for the gifts of the Spirit listed in Scripture; and, discussed the implications of gifts discovery in the life of the congregation.  The workshop participants answered pre-workshop and post-workshop questionnaires which were analyzed according to the contributions of psychological type theory. This integrated perspective is used to understand the material presented in two extensive case studies.  Implications for the practice of pastoral care are explored by examining the pastoral functions of attending, assessing, and intervening. The project showed positive results in that teams from four congregations participated and indicated that they did enjoy, relish and learn from the congregation's stories of life and faith and were helped to discover a number of factors which form a congregation's identity. In the model a district superintendent develops a supportive pastoral relationship with three clergypersons. This is part of a larger design in which the district superintendent is viewed as the bonding agent for vitalization in the United Methodist Church. Standard church renewal efforts have not moved the congregation from a numerical and financial plateau.  This study describes how standard Presbyterian polity processes failed to provide for an open and honest dialogue with the congregation which can develop shared vision.  This study describes how the processes of self-assessment and education worked to produce shared vision. Many of these students become actively involved in the life of the church throughout the period of their study.  However, many others do not.  This project presents a strategy for integrating students into the life of a church.  Mentoring provides an ideal model for involving an entire congregation in ministry to and with students.  Based on a theological framework and using lessons learned from history, demography and ethnography, a three-pronged model of mentoring (visitation/evangelism, mentoring and hospitality) is developed.  The model was tested successfully in Knox Presbyterian Church, Toronto, found next to the University of Toronto.  The study is in three parts.  The first is a theoretical and analytical basis for a programme of mentoring. The second provides a practical manual for establishing a mentoring community in a local church.
