This project focuses on the ministry of the deacon in the MCCA.  It uses the deacons in the Jamaica district as a sample of what exists in the ministry. This paper identifies Religious Ethical Mediation, developed by Marcia Y. Riggs, as a way of recognizing and accepting the differences in the ministry of the deacon and the presbyter. The researcher's hypothesis is: effective deacon ministries in selected large Southern Baptist churches will define the role of deacon scripturally as a role of service, will have carefully constructed job descriptions for which deacons are trained, and will hold deacons accountable for their assigned roles and will recognize their service. A literature review examines the words and texts related to the diaconate and the practice of deacon ministry from throughout church history. The research procedure was case-study research methodology. These interviews provided insight into the interpersonal dynamics at work in the congregations involved and the procedures used in smaller member congregations.  Additional study in curriculum theory helped in the development of a quality guide. The cases are reviewed along four parameters that define basic conditions needed for a human being to be well and to thrive: i.e., connection, identity, freedom, and power; and from three perspectives: family systems using Edwin Friedman's work, individual psychology using Karen Horney's work, and spiritual theology using Ignatius of Loyola's Spiritual Exercises. It then traces some of the history of short term missions to the present.  A church-based study was conducted through a questionnaire sent to every EPC congregation.  The project also records information from interviews with leaders from there EPC congregations who seem to be doing short-term missions well.
