The author studied the relationship of faith and literature, as well as the relationship of the preacher to literature and Scripture. He developed a discipline called 'scanning the skies' that was used in preaching on Christ's Passion during Lent and Easter 2005. This discipline helped the preacher experience Lent/Easter as a unified time, see Lent as a time of the Spirit, and decrease frustration in preaching the Passion. Presently the word stewardship has mostly negative connotations and results; consequently pastors mostly avoid the subject.  The author, a mainline church pastor, draws on personal and several colleagues' experiences and evidence of trends in other mainline churches to discuss the subject. Humor, while more acceptable in modern homiletic strategy, has been characteristically absent in the stewardship message.  This project suggests the gifts of humor align nicely with the needs of stewardship. The qualitative methodology included questionnaires at the initial and final sessions, as well as interviews.  The results of the survey demonstrated that the desired learning had occurred.  The participants gained knowledge of the methods essential to home ownership. Pilot tests and field experiences were among church Bible study groups.  Findings include: the overview approach was well-received, users gained confidence facilitating studies and sharing events from the life of Jesus, sharing among participants was good, and users felt a closer relationship with Jesus. The author uses the West African oral traditions of storytelling as practiced by the West African griot to develop the images of pastor/griot and the preacher/griot.  Using these images and the Emmaus Road story found in Luke 24:13-35, the author develops the Emmaus Road model for pastoral care and the formation of the funeral sermon. It explores the HIV/AIDS-related teaching and ministry of the guru H. H. Ma Jaya Sati Bhagavati and her human care service organization the River Fund, both at Kashi Ashram in Sebastian, FL. After providing her developmental biography, it summarizes her verbal, artistic, and kinesthetic forms of teaching. She responds to HIV/AIDS with the Hindu concept of seva (service) that follows the Hindu religious path of Karma Yoga (action). The project then examines the history and work of the River Fund, paying a particular focus to its de facto AIDS hospice, the River House. The organization is unique in both the Hindu and American religious contexts.
