Most preachers desire to be successful in their pulpit ministry yet many question whether or not it is. The purpose of this thesis is to define successful preaching and list the results a preacher can realistically expect through the faithful preaching of God's Word. The basis of this thesis is the nature and authority of the Word of God. The author will posit that the Bible, the sixty-six books of the Christian canon, is the authoritative Word of God and, therefore, is powerfully effective to bring about change and growth in the lives of the listeners. The effective power of God's Word is, however, affected by three variables: the sovereignty of God, listener response, and the message preached. While the preacher cannot control either the sovereignty of God nor listener response, he is able to remove the obstacles to the faithful and effective preaching of God's Word. This thesis begins by laying the theological foundation for building a case for success in preaching: the nature and authority of both God's Word written and God's Word preached. Next, the vast field of homiletical literature will be explored in order to define the criteria that can be used to the purpose and process of a preaching groups that was formed to encourage successful preaching. The research method was program development. A lecture manual was developed and used to teach historical theology as a concluding class in a ten-month curriculum. A test was developed and administered to the students. The lectures were presented and the students were tested again afterward. Once the lectures were completed, the students were interviewed in focus groups. Through a four-week Bible study exploring missional themes and a survey, participants in the study were asked to reflect on how their involvement in the life of the congregation shaped their perceptions. It analyzes ways in which the postmodern worldview is reflected in the religious and cultural value system of Latino celebrities and writers, as well as in the lives of high school students in Miami, Florida. A questionnaire of one hundred twenty-four students and a personal interview with seven Hispanic students reveal an emerging postmodern worldview among Hispanic teenagers both in and outside of the church. The class included psalms of David, Odes of Solomon, the Kontakia of Romanos the Melodist, the Carmina Gadelica, metrical psalms, and modern psalms being composed today in the eastern and western churches.  The post-test reflected a preference change from saying the psalms in unison to singing psalms in the metrical way to hymn tunes.  Their second choice was singing the psalms to simplified Anglican chant.  Coptic chanting has been said by some to have influenced Celtic music. As churches grew, the Pastor was expected to be a superlative preacher and executive. The position of Executive Pastor solves the crisis and serves in Three Multidimensional Roles of Executive, Shepherd, and Assistant. The Executive Pastor has Five Focused Functions of Administrator, Catalyst, Mentor, Minister and Overseer. With a mix of Roles and Functions, the Executive Pastor implements the vision of the Senior Pastor and the policy of the governing board. Scientific research cited verifies that the mind naturally responds to music, and the chemical response affects the memory center in the brain causing content to be memorized.
