From this position, churches need to become complex adaptive organizations able to function and thrive in 'chaos' so that they can transition to a postmodern environment. The author suggests that what has been traditionally termed and understood as the 'Black Church' is not a sufficient descriptor of the experience of African, African-American, and Caribbean people coming together as one community of faith. Thus, the project seeks to lead the congregations to embrace their cultural diversity using a new paradigm: 'The Africultural Church'. The term 'Africultural' is used to describe a multiethnic faith community of persons of African ancestry, which strives to be wholly Christian and multicultural, yet celebrates its Africanness. It is understood that issues arising form ethnocentrism may challenge this new community. Specifically, there may be cultural distances and stereotypes that must be overcome to effectively engage in ministry. To this end, the project explores the cultural consciousness of the three congregations with respect to worship practices, mission and ministry, and lay leadership; best practices derived from these Africultural ministry settings; and the role of the pastor in leading the congregations to more faithfully embrace their cultural diversity. A model of community transformation is also proposed, which uses Bible study and a study circle process to raise cultural consciousness and promote diversity. Liberation theology, John Wesley's notion of a 'catholic spirit' and personality development theory are theological and theoretical foundations for the model. Using this model, the project seeks to identify held stereotypes and cultural conflicts in one congregation and move that congregation toward the affirmation and wider embrace of its cultural diversity. From that experience, further implications for pastoral leadership and ministry strategy in Africultural communities are drawn."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Wesley Theological Seminary"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5a6e4a36-5801-4bff-8e61-86d7489efb4a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1799714856870346752,"timestamp":"2024-05-22T01:37:15.852Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T08:28:25Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"295993bd-7460-4a5b-a290-ef708317ed66","accessControl_ssim":["bdcf75cc-475e-4967-81fa-a7bc23b2199c"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Project 'gifts and ministries' and its application in pastoral ministry in the Sixth Conference of the Methodist Church in Brazil"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T08:06:33Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-16T23:20:29Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["0854a953-3b2d-4db8-9aec-cd03f61fbfda"],"hasLease_ssim":["dbd35e17-950d-4917-952f-97d6f9dc5aef"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Burrell D Dinkins"],"year_tesim":["2003"],"location_tesim":["Brazil"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Paulo Cesar Da Silva"],"publisher_tesim":["Asbury Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["Leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy--Office","Methodist Church","Pastoral theology"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The intention of this project was to analyze the application of the Project 'Gifts and Ministries' (GM) in the Brazilian church. My intention was to evaluate the application of the GM project in the church by interviewing ten pastors and ten lay leaders in the Six Conference. The criteria for their selection included the following: (1) They are working in important churches in the Conference; (2) They are already applying the GM; (3) They are experienced in pastoral ministry and leadership; and (4) They were pastors and lay leaders in the churches of the conference before the GM was approved by the General Conference in Brazil. More and more individuals are giving importance to their personal spiritual experience. Simultaneously, such people are recognizing the value of usable patterns of spiritual formation from the history of Christian spirituality. These time-tested models are providing help in discovering the divine presence and identifying the quiet whispers of God in one's personal life as well as within the communities to which one belongs. Accepting a renewed quest of spirituality as part of our contemporary American society, this dissertation/project attempted to assist six men, from three distinct generations, in their everyday awareness of God. The pattern from the history of Christian spiritual formation under scrutiny was the 'Spiritual Exercises' written in the 16th century by Ignatius Loyola. From for 12 weeks, September 1 through November 30, six Presbyterian men from the same parish entered into the Exercises. The primary resource was 'Choosing Christ in the World: Directing the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius Loyola According to Annotation Eighteen and Nineteen' by Joseph Tetlow, S.J. During the 90 days each participant followed a daily sequence of prayer and reflection adapted from the Spiritual Exercises. Individually, the retreatants met twice a month with the retreat director/dissertation author and once a month gathered together as a group. Written journal entries composed during the experience, one-on-one meetings with the retreat director/author and self-evaluations completed by the participants at the beginning and conclusion of the project provide the basis to identify affect (emotions) and effect (behaviors) influenced by the experience with the Exercises.
