The researcher defines a properly functioning congregation as a thriving congregation, which meets its goals in various areas of its life.  Churches that fail to thrive need to look for the barriers that prevent them from accomplishing this goal.  This study is an effort to find the barriers in two churches in western Indiana by means of interviews, surveys, observation of groups within the churches, and from statistical records. Chapter 5 evaluates the strengths and weaknesses of the project. The primary teacher/catechesis is the liturgy of the Church.  In the ancient church the process had four steps or stages: evangelization/inquiry or the precatechumenate, the catechumenate or catechesis, purification or enlightenment marked by the rites of Christian initiation, and finally mystagogy.  This ancient four step process disappears sometime around the fifth century.  The Roman Catholic Church's Second Vatican Council called for a recovery of the catechumenate which led to the Rite of Christian Initiation for Adults.  The RCIA is a set of rites which structure the four steps of the catechumenal process.  This project is a survey of the past forty years of catechumenal practice and the implications for Presbyterians. The acknowledgment of illiteracy is the first step toward the empowerment of African Americans.  The methodologies used to achieve these goals were surveys, pretests, posttests, questionnaires, and qualitative research.  There were six, ninety-minute sessions which focused on adult literacy, economic and spiritual empowerment.  At the conclusion of the six-week sessions, all the adults demonstrated an increased ability in reading competency skills. After discussing the biblical and theological mandates for apologetics as well as the development of the current postmodern worldview, a case is made that the church needs to respond with a well-reasoned worldview/philosophical argument for the authority and inspiration of the Bible.     A description of the project is given, describing the process from promotion to evaluation. The primary content of the project was a sermons series which was supplemented by an apologetics class. This work contains a brief description of the sermons and a synopsis of the major apologetic arguments of each.     The final chapter provides a description of the empirical data derived from the evaluation of a focus group, and the conclusions were clear. Chapter 1 states the rationale for strategizing. Chapter 2 presents biblical and theological foundations for strategizing by churches. Chapter 3 posits theoretical foundations of strategic planning for churches today by presenting and critiquing eight current models. Chapter 4 articulates the four-step Eureka Paradigm for strategizing by churches. The four steps are retrospection, introspection, prospection, and direction. Chapter 5 addresses the possible reasons for the lack of acceptance of the Eureka Paradigm. Interventions were made employing educational and formation processes: (1) educating the leadership about the value of actualizing spiritual gifts, (2) awakening persons to the idea and benefit of gifts through sermons, (3) offering a class to help people discover and use their unique gifts, and (4) using gifts discernment in the officer nominating process.
