The author studied the small group methodology by establishing a small group movement within the congregation using the elements of maintenance and mission. Maintenance activities include fellowship, education, and worship, which edify the members. Mission activities include evangelism, local and global outreach, and ecumenism for sharing the gospel with non-members. The focus was to create community through a process of dialogue in an effort to define the meaning of patient focused care.  As the organization was undergoing considerable crisis (provoked in part by fiscal restraints at the time), a special emphasis was placed on organizational grief.  The two domains engaged in the study were from organizational development, specifically the work of Peter Senge as it applies to organizational learning and pastoral ministry in the context of a Critical Care Unit in crisis.  The findings validate the learning organization as a concept in support of change and empowerment. In addition, a theological/pastoral perspective, while recognizing the value of the organic, relational nature of organizational design, pointed to the need for the development of personal awareness, as an issue of capacity for relationship in organizational learning. Palliative care was given to grieving children by an interdisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, teachers, and chaplain. Adults and children shared their work of play, while naming fears. HospiceKidsCare became a procedural study to assess children's grief. The study incorporates adult processes of assessment, treatment, and evaluation in parallel to child processes of naming, playing, and healing during a death experience. One way is by becoming more focused and intentional in ministry through establishing and implementing a mission statement. Through a series of Bible studies, we developed a mission statement and established goals and strategies for its implementation. Our progress was measured using Stephen A. Maccia's Becoming a healthy church: 10 characteristics. Initial results, while not cataclysmic and overwhelming, indicate some promising signs of revitalization. Church auxiliaries of Hemingway Memorial African Methodist Episcopal Church of District Heights, Maryland, then reviewed the needs based on the mission and interest of the auxiliaries. After reviewing this data, a Christ-like response to community advocacy issues and needs, including housing and employment, was established. This project implemented new faith-based initiatives, a new church management structure, and instruction for key individuals and auxiliary groups. The revitalization of a church is not revival or reformation. It is the biblically delineated and identified principles given to leaders to enable a church to move from its disabled and diseased status to one of vitality and health. This dissertation will point out the necessity of this ministry which will be clarified in the introduction of this paper. This dissertation has seven chapters. Chapter one explains why revitalization is necessary. Chapter two gives several key principles of church revitalization while chapter three gives a biblical paradigm for revitalization. The content of chapter four is a review of four contemporary books that have been written on the subject of revitalization. Chapter five highlights the 'Embers to a Flame' church revitalization conference materials and chapter six suggests several key roles that pastors and leadership can play in keeping their church vital and healthy. The results indicated that ministers wanted to be equipped to do ministry; therefore, validating this certification program. The certification program seminars will include pre-seminar assignments, as well as a post-seminar evaluation.
