Postmodern Presbyterians long for more balance, order, community, and intimacy with God. The thesis of this project is that these Benedictine practices can provide balance, order, community, and intimacy with God for Presbyterian faith. The project followed the lives of eight Christian lay persons as they sought to embody Benedictine practices over a period of thirteen weeks. Qualitative research methods were used, principally through taped interviews. The secular world has no place for God, and church tradition has tended to emphasize God's transcendence.  As a result, God's presence needs to be revised in a way that is meaningful to contemporary believers.  It is my thesis that for my Latvian Lutheran congregation, the imagery of God that is found in our Godsongs, together with the dynamic relationship of God-and-the-world that is process thought, can offer creative possibilities for preaching God's presence in daily life.  The project examines the Godsongs which are part of the folkloric heritage of the Latvian people.  This ancient and pre-Christian tradition envisions God's relationship to the world in a way that is quite similar to process thought.  In both paradigms, God is ever-present in all of creation as shared divine wisdom and power. The Godsongs say that God is present and God helps in poetic images that speak to the heart.  Process thought addresses the mind; it models God-and-the-world in a way that makes sense to the scientific sensibilities of contemporary people.  The Godsongs and process thought provide new metaphors for preaching that address the whole person--head and heart.  As metaphors, they are partial but also illuminating.  Because they are 'heard' in a way that older metaphors may not be, they bring the hearer of the sermon into the preaching process by providing them with the opportunity to agree or disagree. It also includes observation of how church history witnesses the fruit of women's ministry. The dissertation is also to encourage the women in the North American Chinese churches to participate in ministry. The author researched many challenges unique to the Chinese women in North America because these are the places the women of the church are at; they are also the very places where the women can begin to minister to other women outside the church. The author encouraged the women in the church to first affirm, know themselves, and focus on their personal growth. Then, they are exhorted to participate in the Great Commission. The project design consisted of interviews with pastors of older adults, a lecture-training series of encouragers to assist older adults with their transition, and feed back from encouragers and older adults about the transition ministry. It explained how new Christians practiced their faith, discovered their spiritual gifts and became involved in local church ministry. A Bible orientation discussed the origin, structure, background and interpretation of the Bible. The content of the material was geared toward educated adults. The research focuses on the need for this project, the proper biblical and theological foundation for church ministries, and the way in which some churches within the Christian Reformed denomination are responding administratively to changes within our North American society. The project was evaluated based on the standard of how well the emphasis deepened one's love for God and for one another.
