When people are stressed it is important to give back to everyday life its sacredness. The author pays attention to the meaning of metaphor and narrative in relation to preaching and daily life. Metaphors and stories, fiction, help the preacher to construct a new world. Story has the power to affect. With the help of story we interpret and form reality. One of the conclusions is that it is important to be aware of the closure of the sermon. How should a preacher know when he or she shall stop? The purpose of these groups was to nurture discernment in the lives of the participants. By 'discernment,' we mean fostering an awareness of God working in our lives. Members of the groups strove to assist each other in paying attention to God. Nine people were trained to be leaders of the groups. Five groups were formed incorporating twenty-seven participants. As part of the project, a spiritual discernment handbook was developed by the author. At the first meeting the participants were asked sixteen questions to describe their spiritual life and their practice of spiritual disciplines. So strong is the experience that a sense of identity is oftentimes unconsciously defined from the standards of the colonizer. The 'westaholic' attitude among the people acquired through years of subjugation makes it difficult to engage a story beyond that of colonial times. 'As the bamboo breaks...' attempts to reveal a story and a history waiting to be understood. It looks into the people's wisdom as told, concealed and preserved by Malakas and Maganda. It is a wisdom that runs through the blood of its people even beyond the colonial experience. It is a wisdom that lives! Christianity needs to listen to this story not only for it to be relevant but for Christianity to continue to live. The dialogue that this thesis proposes comes from the challenge of 'cosmodicy' within a globalized context where the subalterns speak. This dares the so-called experts to actually listen and learn. The story of Malakas and Maganda gives us some keys toward retrieving a Filipino theological anthropology. As such, this local story can be a source and resource of spirituality that can enrich not only the locals but Christianity as well. The kind of transformation that this story leads us to is hope-filled. The power of drama to communicate values, truths, and beliefs has a long history in the secular milieu. Although the biblical tradition is not a dramatic tradition, its narrative is flexible enough to become a dramatic presentation. This study traces the role of drama in the Roman Catholic tradition of faith and its use as a viable tool for individuals to experience healing and reconciliation as they tell their story in the context of sacred scripture. Research has revealed that while many individuals may seek pastoral counseling, such intervention may not always lead them to a place of acceptance in the community of faith. These individuals may take solace in hearing the Word of God and allow that Word to draw them into the compassionate presence of a loving God. Empirical data from pastoral counseling experience, biblical and theological insights, use of active contemplation methods, social and theological issues take on new meaning when one experiences exclusion from 'the rooms' of the Christian community. The power of a dramatic play can be used to build a bridge between the individual and the Christian community. The reflections of the participants are revealed in the power of this medium, which brings healing and reconciliation to individuals and communities. This work recognizes drama as a credible tool to communicate truth, to address issues that are often ignored, and to engage a community in a dynamic way. Drama has power where words fail. It causes something to happen within both the community and the dramatist."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Miscellaneous"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["4f3e9d5f-fc19-4d44-a264-44b56604eb9a"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130051490611201,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:25:27.450Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:38Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T07:50:37Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"f06872a6-af7f-4c88-ab81-6d26424e4087","accessControl_ssim":["62f8ea4b-d260-451f-a249-4d13af3a4771"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Prayers, presence, gifts, and service: the development of active membership in a United Methodist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T07:08:37Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T04:59:33Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["35d56fce-2f97-4f40-bd82-097297799706"],"hasLease_ssim":["6786f45b-b527-48dd-8d18-ef332a5a2fac"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Zachary W Eswine"],"year_tesim":["2002"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["L Joseph Scheets"],"publisher_tesim":["Covenant Theological Seminary"],"subject_tesim":["First United Methodist Church (Collinsville, Ill)","Small groups","Church work","Church membership","United Methodist Church"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["The purpose of this study was to discover factors that contributed to the development of active church membership in The First United Methodist Church of Collinsville, Illinois. A second reason was their commitment to lay ministry. The third reason emerged from religious consumerism and opportunities for faith development.
