Korean Pentecostals often perceive the Holy Spirit as powerful, individualistic, nonhistorical, and redemptive. Culture and religion have imposed on women a 'necessity' to endure violence at home. Self-help groups seek healing and self-awareness for these women, based on their personal experiences and on an examination of the 'addictive' nature of Japanese society.
