In examining the culture of diocesan priests in the US since 1965, the project finds two dominant identity metaphors--priest-as-mediator and priest-as-minister--and traces their historical roots through a series of 'flash points.' Using a heuristic analogy of the body, the project then analyzes three ecclesiologies emerging most clearly from both texts: hierarchical church, communal church, and pilgrim church in mission to the world. The project circulates an attitudinal questionnaire on the Likert model to 85 pastors serving Seventh-day Adventist churches in the southeastern US, finding that these African Americans are reticent about the therapeutic process because of perceived stigma. This finding is borne out in current literature suggesting that African Americans as a group feel stigmatized by the mental health process and therefore resist it. Based on interviews and questionnaires distributed among bereaved families, the project constructs a model that establishes networks among families, funeral directors, support groups, and social service agencies; empowers families and support ministries to meet needs of those who experience grief; and promotes healthy pastor/parish relationships as pastors lead bereaved families and communities through stages of grief. Qualitative research conducted with eight officers reveals three common life experiences--emotionally rejecting parents, low self-esteem, and restricted affect--that issue in three common coping responses: attachment to television heroes, marriage, and careers in law enforcement.
