Employing conversational, semistructured interviews and a demographic questionnaire, the project finds two primary sources of stress: feelings of powerlessness in the appointment process and economic entrapment in the wife's career. Lack of foreign missionaries during much of this time left Estonian Methodism with a strong, indigenous leadership, but it has also inherited an indefinite ecclesiology and an incomplete understanding of the sacraments, which have issued in confusion of identity. The project conducts interviews with 15 pastors in two focus groups and distributes a questionnaire completed by 426 laypersons.
