The black church has been the main source for growth opportunities for black Americans, but the church has not been able to address all the needs of mind, body, and spirit. Growth-groups can assist black people to explore internal, debilitating conditions, and can help create changes in perceptual awareness. Elements of the model tested include: theological, educational and developmental methodology, cross-cultural meeting and ministry and spiritual growth through Native American and Christian disciplines. Consequently, we should develop ways of worshipping that will meet the needs of those who attend yet stimulate the uninvolved and turned-off persons of the community.  The literature of worship, past and present, was studied, along with the worship of various congregations.  At the same time, members of our worship commissions were encouraged to read books on worship and to ask questions where they were unclear about why we worship as we do.  Worship can be enriched, but this involves change which may be resisted. Our approach has been for the pastor and worship commissions to work together as they looked at our worship and decided upon ways it might be enriched and improved. If general agreement was not reached, changes were not made. After a good many changes had been made, we prepared a questionnaire to obtain congregational reaction to them and to help us plan future actions. The project included a face-to-face interview with most members of the congregation to obtain member responses concerning their own Christian participation and needs, together with their views of the life of the congregation and work of its leadership.  All of this was compared with the results of a major biblical study about the church. This project report describes a workshop which utilized research drawn from documents of the American Bishops' Committee on Priestly Life, the theology of Karl Rahner, and the developmental psychology of Erik Erikson.  The workshop, given on three occasions, enabled seminarians to examine their issues of personal growth within the broader perspectives of theology and psychology. A panel of lay persons plus a dialogue between biblical scholars made critical biblical scholarship available to the average believer using a video cassette recorder. Research involved perusing Vatican II documents and subsequent directives. Academic study of media production and related disciplines helped complete a new curriculum with a pilot video program which has been successfully field-tested.
