The author states that both subjective (affective) and objective (cognitive) empathy are essential kinds of empathy in the development of mature empathy. Foster parents were recruited and began to function.  The theology undergirding the project, including a discussion of the church-state issue, is included. This was a study of twenty people who were divided into two groups.  The one group received eight lessons concerning process thought; the second group did not receive the lessons.  All twenty persons kept daily journals to record insights and feelings about God, self, and the world; all participants prayed daily for fifteen minutes during a period of eight weeks. A survey questionnaire addressing the issue of pastoral presence was administered personally to 101 randomly chosen ministers of the Western Pennsylvania United Methodist Conference.  Twenty-two of this group were given further opportunity of an oral response in an open interview.  Positive and negative trait patterns were identified by these pastors.
