By doubtful is meant all things upon which the Bible makes no pronouncement, either by way of acceptance or prohibition. The method of study was, first of all, to pursue all occurences of the term 'conscience' in the New Testament, discerning what it is and how it functions.  Secondly, the two major passages of scripture on the subject were exegeted (that is, 1 Corinthians 8-10 and Romans 14:1-15:7, which deal with the Christian attitude toward doubtful things).  It was concluded that where the scripture neither condones nor prohibits a Christian's involvement in an activity, he has the freedom to participate in good conscience. It analyzes present varied practices used by Lutheran churches to call their pastors, measures attitudes towards their practices, and suggests viable alternatives. The method of study involves an examination of the call-placement process used by six Christian churches in the United States.  It also involves data from a sampling survey sent out to 450 Lutheran pastors and congregational presidents.
