The thesis was that people can be taught and trained how to pray and as a result experience growth in Christ.  The methodology focused first on the pastor: his study of prayer, practice of prayer, recruiting, teaching, and training prayer group leaders. He scripted prayer concerts and reflected on them.  He also gave inventories to the participants. The primary purpose was accomplished through research in records and publications preserved in the denominational archives. The subsequent purpose was accomplished in a seminar presentation to the department. Seeking exposure to diverse scriptural forms, the research utilized New Testament lectionary readings (Year C). The method of research was qualitative in that the writer was a participant observer using Whitehead's model of theological reflection. The project began with the hypothesis that the congregation had an inadequate understanding of the purpose and function of the funeral service.  The congregation demonstrated the validity of the hypothesis after completing a congregational survey.  Eleven church members participated in a study of the funeral service as worship.  The study involved three sermons, five teaching sessions, and two workshop classes. A series of sermons and sermon interactions was utilized to increase the congregation's awareness of the need for training new adult members in discipleship.  A curriculum was designed that consisted of ten discipleship training sessions.  To determine the effectiveness of the program, the experimental research method was used.
