This project documents the need for an intentional process of integration.  The author contends that a change occurs both in the new member and the congregation, and the congregation must be sensitive to those changes.  He proposes a model for integration and a tool for evaluation to help the maturing congregation remain sensitive. Congregational projects and a questionnaire provide research resources. According to LC-MS statistics (1977-1987) 17.2 percent of the Synod's parish clergy began a new ministry each year.  The author offers practical insights on congregations and leadership. Once the research phase was completed, the materials were assembled into a seminar format.  The principles of adult education were followed and the project was field tested in a local congregation. Church leaders have never been able to package neatly the redemptive work of Jesus Christ, their responsive servanthood, the omniscience of God, and the ecclesiastical hierarchy necessary for a local church to present to the world the gospel of Jesus Christ in the fashion it deserves. A questionnaire format was designed to ascertain the projected levels of comfort the respondent would have concerning his/her own and his/her spouse's friendships.  Questions were also asked about perceptions of the spouse's comfort levels.  Four different types of friendship were surveyed to minimize the possibility of bias had the survey only covered cross-gender friendships. Three scales, verified in previous studies, also were used. Kendall's tau-b correlations were used on the data.  The results showed that a majority of respondents were comfortable with all the types of friendship studied. However, there was a clear reduction in comfort for cross-gender friendships and mixed-gender group friendships. Males tended to be less comfortable than females with same-gender and cross-gender friendships, with females reporting less comfort for couple and group friendships. The project documented a nine-month intervention process specifically designed for one parish.  As a result of the intervention, the council members grew in their understanding of the church's mission, the pastor acquired new ministerial skills, accountability was more evident, and the council and its commissions functioned more effectively.  This study found that collaborative ministry requires commitment and patience. Some implications for the recruitment, training and assignment of ministers are identified.
