The thesis was that churches that corporately emphasized the pastoral roles of enabler and evangelist grow more rapidly than those which place less emphasis on these roles.  A questionnaire was administered to two groups of churches -- a control group of churches that grows approximately ten percent per annum and a randomly selected group of churches that grow slowly or decline in size. They can be powerful aids in preaching if and only if they are kept in a supporting role and do not overpower the sermon.  The project explores ways of realizing the power of illustrations while avoiding their dangers.  It reviews sources for illustrations and methods of filing them.  Sermons that use these ideals are evaluated by a representative group of parishioners. Data is drawn from surveys and personal observations.
