This use of multiple methods is intended to impress the reader with the urgency of this problem and the growing need for lay leadership.  Lay participation in ministry requires the encouragement and support of clergy and religious. Current communications research and resources (new bells) are presented to enable parish ministers to develop communications strategies as a tool in ministry (new steeples).  Chapter 1 explains the communications process of message-sending and message-receiving.  Chapters 2, 3 and 4 focus on the three primary elements of that process: communicator, audience, and message.  Chapters 5 and 6 discuss the mass media.  The paper concludes with a theological perspective on the ministry of communications as an incarnational experience. The author interviewed fourteen such survivors, male and female, according to an interview schedule designed for breaking silence and raising the issue to public consciousness.  The data reveals that all participants in the project except one were sexually abused in their own childhood homes and most by multiple perpetrators, male and female. Each of these theories is surveyed. A case study is presented as a model of the progressive perspective. Toward this end five separate strategies were utilized: an eight-week prayer course for volunteers; three sermons; a restructuring of the Sunday morning worship service to include a stronger emphasis on the pastoral prayer; a restructuring of the Wednesday night prayer service to encourage mutual congregational intercession; and the initiation of a continuing prayer ministry in the church. An eight-week course for a group of fifteen parents was developed and implemented, covering such topics as communication, discipline, and faith development.  Pretests and posttests were administered to the group members.  The posttest results revealed increases in the awareness of some important factors for parents affected by divorce.  The responses showed especially favorable reactions to the relational aspect of the group.
