Contemporary fasting practices in the Orthodox church are discussed in terms of the social history of Orthodox jurisdictions in the United States and the effects of a number of social factors on pastoral issues in Orthodox spirituality.  The paper also reports an empirical study of the effects of fasting combined with prayer or prayer alone on subjects who were either regular fasters or who did not normally fast. Non-fasters following a regimen of fasting and prayer reported improvements in their general spiritual lives. The dissertation examines relevant literature in three areas: urbanization and its relationship to the Sydney Anglican Church, the history of the Sydney Anglican Church, and the development of a congregational theology of church in Sydney Anglicanism. Case studies of four Sydney Anglican churches test the findings of the literature. Recent literature raises questions about indissolubility and the nature of premarital counseling for second nuptials. Regarding indissolubility, the Catholic priest must be pastoral and ecclesial.  Regarding pastoral preparation for second nuptials, the priest integrates a number of roles. Unique concerns in second nuptials are grief, guilt, building a new family, personal limitations of bride and groom, and spirituality in remarriage. Questionnaires were sent to 150 (99 returned) Presbyterian pastors.  The findings of these three studies were then correlated.  The results suggested 5 major styles of leadership: charismatic (Weber), dictatorial, participative, democratic, and laissez faire. It is a concern that many churches have not come to terms with.  In Australia unemployment was a major concern in the early part of the 1980's.  This study looks at one major industrial city, namely, Wollongong in N.S.W. and considers the responsibility of the church to do ministry with the unemployed.  It raises the preliminary issues of consciousness raising within the church on the issues of unemployment.  It looks at economic, sociological, and theological aspects of unemployment and then proceeds to use the process of structural analysis as a tool in a workshop situation. The study involves in-depth research into the approaches of the two major figures in the history of spiritual direction: Benedict and Ignatius Loyola, representing the ancient and classical eras of religious thought, respectively.  There follows a study of four modern women writers in the field of spiritual direction: Evelyn Underhill, Dorothee Soelle, Sandra Schneiders, and Carolyn Gratton.  The insights of all of these writers are evaluated, sifted and combined to form the basis of a workshop on spiritual direction presented twice to groups of apporximately 100 women from the denomination in a weekend retreat setting. Part 1 examines such issues as apodictic and casuistic law with relation to the decalogue and covenant code.  Included is a study of rebirth and discussion of treaty and covenant and the social implications of the covenant with respect to settlement and conquest.  The conclusion emphasizes the uniqueness of Israelite religion.  Part 2 addresses the Mosaic and Davidic covenants and is a 'walk through the Bible' for lay discussion in a beginner's class. Bioethical literature from 1980 to 1988 was reviewed. There is a bioethical role for pastors complementing the function of healthcare providers.  Implications for pastors applying six ethical principles and nine underlying ethical foundations reveal they will benefit by making use of them. However, in the formation of a new hospital ethics committee, I observed no established role for pastors. Seven religious experiences examined by theologian John MacQuarrie are presented in bioethical situations.
