Elderly Jewish people were interviewed to ascertain their coping with bereavement and to see whether there is any correlation between their religious practices and their ablilty to cope with loss. Simultaneously, bereavement support groups were organized for the elderly and were co-counseled by a rabbi and social worker from the Jewish family service. Archdiocese of Washington (DC)","Paulist Fathers","Laity"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis presents a planning and action project which adapted the missionary preaching tradition of the Missionary Society of St. Paul the Apostle (known as the Paulists) to the setting of contemporary Roman Catholic parishes in the Washington, DC, area.  Parish-based evangelization was shaped by contemporary Roman Catholic concepts of parish, lay ministry, and evangelization.  The project consisted of 1) involving parishes, 2) forming lay evangelization committees, and 3) developing evangelization activities.  This was done in four parishes in the Washington, DC area, between May 1988 and June 1989. Research showed that parishes became involved and people were reached by evangelization projects. The second chapter puts the approaches and attitudes towards sheltering the homeless into a sociological framework. Chapter three presents data regarding the Tent City demonstration during which homeless people participated in June, 1985, on the Boston Common, which resulted in the program, Family House Project. Chapter four presents the data on Family House Project which set as its main principle the belief that the homeless people could and should have greater control over their lives. Finally, chapter five seeks to analyze Family House Project in terms of two themes: empowerment and community. A selective review of relevant literature dealing with medical, psychological, and theological facets of the disorder was conducted, and a case study was discussed.  Person-centered therapy supplemented by techniques which were congruent and appropriate from other modalities was indicated in treatment. The author analyzes this therapeutic situation by utilizing the resources of material on child abuse, the resulting pain of being abused as a child, theology, psychotherapy, and the story of Jesus meeting the woman at the well in the Gospel of John 4:7-21.  The author determines that a pastoral counselor must address and be in the process of working through his or her past abusive experiences before counseling with counselees who have also been abused as children.  The author creatively uses the images of a counseling well, water, houses, and abandoned fireplaces to bring the pain and the journey of recovery alive in this pastoral counseling setting. To test the thesis a class of six sessions was taught which focused on the universal priesthood as well as vocation, affirmation of gifts, spiritual disciplines and the mutual consolation and conversation of the saints.  In conclusion, the changed historical context of today, as well as apathy, ignorance, and limited endorsement by clergy limit the thesis.
