It also reports the results of such a pilot program in a United Methodist church in Texas in 1987.  Gifts are identified as abilities, ordinary and extraordinary, which can contribute to the purpose of the church as it serves the reign of God.  Many varied resources for gifts clarification are identified and analyzed.  Ministries are defined as services which are rendered by all members of the church, lay and clergy, within and outside the church's gathered life.  The study outlines the efforts of a gifts discovery project in a local congregation.  The work of the planning team, an evaluation of their work, and an evaluation of the project are included.  The essential elements of a ministry of gifts discovery are identified. Nine men and nine women (mean=74 yrs) constituted the control group.  Both groups were pre-tested with the Templer Death Anxiety Scale and the Lester Attitude Toward Death Scale and post-tested with the Templer Death Anxiety Scale and the Collett-Lester Fear of Death Scale.  The null-hypothesis was confirmed: the educational module was not statistically significant in altering death and dying fear/anxiety in the treatment group. It is discovered that, although communal spiritual discernment is a viable alternative, it demands more personal and corporate preparation and skill in prayer and discernment than most congregations possess. These included Bible study, covenant group commitment, spiritual discipline, liturgy and ethical reflection.  These forms were focused on grace and themselves constituted means of grace.  By examining closely where they have fallen into cheap grace and where they are called to receive and embody God's costly grace, participants significantly enhanced their understanding of God's grace in their lives. These two approaches are so intertwined  and interrelated that both are needed if one is to answer the most pressing question of our time -- can the human race survive? The issues surrounding clergy salaries are presented.  A target group of large and small membership churches test the thesis: when there is a method, and when the district superintendent and bishop support the method, salaries will significantly increase.  Issues considered include stewardship, pastoral appointments, clergy self-esteem, parsonages, budgets, workshops for laity and clergy, and the process of raising salaries. Research involves the gathering of local church history, social information, and demographics.  A study series on the nature of the church and its mission, developed and implemented by the pastor, is presented to a group of laity. At a retreat the laity give formation to the statement, which receives congregational adoption.  Questionnaires help analyze the laity's beliefs about the nature of the church and its mission.  Evaluations appraise the project's content and process and the leader's performance.
