Through this training the elders are: acquainted with a biblical understanding of eldership as a ministerial office along with providing two views (McGarvey and Errett) of eldership from the Disciple tradition; to train the elders in various areas of ministry; to provide opportunities for the elders in the ministry of the congregation; and to commission the elders in the ministry of their choice.  The project provides opportunities for prayer and reflection upon their role in the mission and ministry of the congregation.  Drawing upon this experience, the elders engaged in training others for this caring ministry. The study involved eight learning sessions that identified the strengths which members had for a ministry of care. Individuals were trained to creatively use skills of caregiving to members and to the mission community of Bethany Christian Church in time of need.  The project also provided ways for participants who were unable to attend the sessions to become involved in caregiving. The study consisted of twelve hourly sessions.  They treated both the theoretical and practical dimensions of evangelism.  Results were measured using the following evaluative instruments: 1) case studies; 2) pre-seminar analyses; 3) post-seminar analyses; and 4) seminar participant evaluation forms.  All of these have been included in the final project report.  The project was successful in assisting the nine seminar participants in their efforts to refine their analytical and relational skills. The study developed a questionnaire which enlisted Portuguese speakers in an eight-week program to evaluate a weekly broadcast of gospel messages.  The study sought to measure attitudinal change, content assimilation, and possible future involvement in Protestant activities. Results were: attitudinal change: 30 percent indicated a positive shift; content assimilation: a majority indicated understanding and retention; possible future involvement: 46 percent indicated interest in Protestant activities.
