Manna Bible Institute is an interracial and multi-ethnic school in the inner city of Philadelphia.  The first chapter introduces the concepts of biblical education and urban ministry.  The second chapter identifies the biblical and historical rationale for the school's ministry by tracing the tradition of biblical instruction from ancient Israel to contemporary evangelicalism.  Chapter three provides the theological and social framework for the project by identifying biblical concepts that support responsive urban ministry.  Chapter four traces the development of the school from the dual influences of Bible education and evangelical social concern. Chapters five to seven discuss a survey which evaluates the school's responsiveness to the needs and interests of its students and graduates. In recent years, there has been a greater emphasis on Hispanic ministries in this region which has resulted in the establishment of new local churches.  There are six congregations that serve Hispanic families.  A common problem affects the growth and development of these churches.  The Conference has not provided adequate training for the pastors and lay persons of the congregations.  In this study five of these churches engage in a six-session training project aimed at motivating the participants for local mission.  Every session begins with a keynote address followed by a question and answer period and three different discussion workshops.  Each workshop deals with a specific area of concern: missiology, Christian education, or Christian stewardship. The study provides a missiological framework based on biblical imperatives from the book of Acts.  It refers to socio-cultural realities as well as denominational factors in the life of these congregations. One reason for this interest is that conflict can cause dysfunctional and functional effects in any congregation.  The theological, social, andragogical, and methodological approaches to the study of conflict management and reconciliation undergird the development of a six-module seminar.  This seminar exposes ministers to skills which aid interpersonal relationships: listening, assertiveness, conflict resolution, collaborative problem-solving, and skill selection. While the office of bishop is an ancient one for many churches, it is new to the Lutheran Church in America. The Lutheran Church has used this title only since 1980 in Atlanta.  The thesis is confirmed through the use of three methods: historical; analytical; and practical.  The project argues for maintaining the title and function of bishop in the new church for those who serve in a supervisory role with congregations and ministers.  This stance is taken from a practical rather than ontological view of bishop.  The Lutheran church believes that the office of bishop has a special function but not a special status. The analysis of the data confirms five of the six hypotheses.  However, the data of bereaved parents' experience demonstrates a complexity that is not anticipated fully in the hypotheses. The sample is 89 Jesuit priests who complete a demographic data sheet, Maslach Burnout Inventory, and a Sources of Stress in Ministry Questionnaire.  Forty-three are from the rural group (experimental) and 46 are from the urban group (control).  The study tests three major research hypotheses by using the two tailed t-test for independent samples.  It finds that rural Jesuits are more emotionally exhausted and experience a greater sense of depersonalization than urban Jesuits.  There is little difference between the groups on personal accomplishment, physical symptoms, and days of illness. Rural Jesuits score higher on the critical items cluster of the Sources of Stress Indicator. This project demonstrates that a wholistic care model of teaching and pastoral counseling positively affects one's retirement maturity index score (an indicator of one's successful retirement ability), as measured by the Johnson-Gray Retirement Profile (JGRAP).  The project uses a pre-test and a post-test methodology to measure the Retirement Maturity Index (RMI) of seventy-four (74) volunteers who proceed through a retirement course.  The course introduces interventions of personal counseling and seminars.  The study finds significant changes in eleven (11) of the fifteen (15) major areas of retirement after these interventions. It develops a research instrument (the Religious Orientations Questionnaire), which is given to a population that has Millon Clinical Multiaxial Inventories on file.  The clients answer essay questions on satisfaction in living, their understanding of faith, God and the helpfulness of pastoral counseling and submit follow-up questionnaires.  The project reports on discussions with the pastoral counselors of the clients and draws practical implications.  The study concludes that differing religious orientations can be documented between clients with histrionic and compulsive patterns.  Female clients of all personality groups score closer to histrionic religious patterns.  No other gender-related findings can be ascertained. A group of lay persons were involved in an educational process directed at learning about these needs.  Each lay person then was paired with one inner-city youth in order to develop a relationship. Throughout this project both groups were given surveys to determine if their involvement would produce changes in attitudes. The program shows that the involvement of lay persons with the youth changed the lay attitudes, if not their theology.
