This educational model explores the phenomenon of conflict with these youth.  It has participants practice conflict resolution skills which relate primarily to personal lifestyles and interpersonal relationships.  The project is informed by a biblical-theological-ethical understanding of conflict which has as its foundation the theology of Reinhold Niebuhr.  It also takes into account human developmental psychology in the forms put forward by James Fowler, Erik Erikson, Jean Piaget and Lawrence Kohlberg. Yet, often this opportunity is missed.  In light of this concern, the author developed a small group course, which was aimed to introduce adults to a Wesleyan way of relating to God.  By using experimental theology as a model and Kurt Lewin's 'Steps of Change' as an outline, he established a dialogue between the participants' experience and theological concepts in the Wesleyan heritage. The study consists of a review of pertinent literature in the field of preaching, an examination of taped and published sermons, interviews with colleagues and four sessions with a committee of laypersons.  The study results in a set of guidelines for pastors on the use of personal material in sermons.  A committee of laypersons evaluates the initial guidelines with respect to clarity, organization and face validity. This project develops and implements a twelve-session training program with ten participants on lay caring ministry in a church.  The results include an increase in the congregation's acceptance of lay involvement in ministry, especially caring; a broadening in the congregation's concept of caring for others; an increase in the participants' willingness to be accepting of others and in their ability to provide lay caring ministry; and the development by the participants of many specific ministries. In a small group setting, based on the concepts of the Wesleyan class meeting and faith development theory, the author initiated a pilot program on new member nurture.  The major problem addressed is how to sustain those who become members of the church.  The primary result was that both old and new members discovered a nurturing environment within the context of the larger institutional church. Wesley's class meeting format and his ordo salutis, the patristic concept of prayer, disciplined living and the struggle with the 'passions' and contemporary understandings that spirituality involves the whole of one's being undergirded the project.  The goal was that through this experience participants would confirm and strengthen their responses to the gospel. The drama evoked the stories of the congregation and strengthened their own developing faith journeys toward deepening trust.  The full-length drama was written with information obtained from faith development interviews of adults and from letters, writings, poems and memoirs in the life of 79-year-old Libba Herbert. A participants' guide is used to interpret this religious education ministry project to the audience who evaluated the experience and confirmed the project's thesis.
