The goal of the practicum was to develop a plan for recruiting and training lay leaders in the local church that could help solve the problem by providing a reservoir of trained and willing persons adequate to meet the needs of that church. The author worked with a local church in developing and using a leadership plan that was repeated for four years. Evaluations and observations indicated that the plan did make a significant difference in the availability of lay leadership. While working with divorced people the author discovered one theme that is common to nearly all divorce situations, the theme of loneliness.  To address the theme of loneliness he modeled his procedure after William B Ogleby Jr's book Biblical themes for pastoral care. Oglesby underscores the importance of using the biblical story to intersect life themes. Parents and children thought family communication was facilitated when a shared praxis model was used. From a literary review of theodicy, the book of Job and crisis management, the author develops numerous hypotheses regarding ministry to critically ill parishioners.  He then surveys and interviews critically ill persons who are both members of selected 'mainline' churches and residents of the Lower Yakima Valley of Washington state. A consequence is that young people are led to think a troubled marriage may be discarded conveniently.  The purpose of this project is to bring together biblical references and values, a study of current literature and insights gained from a survey of the attitudes of youth, to produce a program which influences young people in their attitudes and expectations regarding marriage. It reviews relevant historical, biblical and other literature in the field as a background for the project. The study concludes that such persons need to have a valued place in the church.  To determine some of the obstacles to integrating persons with mental retardation into the church, a series of personal interviews are conducted from which twelve major obstacles are identified.
