Lesbians, a group which experiences a dual alienation (as women and as homosexual people), were the project's target group.  The two phases of the study were 1) the development of a planning team from the alienated which developed the encounter experience, and 2) the actual self encounter. The event itself may exist only a few moments, but its impact and consequences can extend for weeks, or months, and sometimes years.  In short, when a disaster occurs, a crisis is produced which has immediate and long-term effects upon the total community.  The intent of this project is to provide a resource guide for volunteers who are selected by their church bodies or congregations and who are willing to become consultants or counselors at disaster sites. Most churches, however, need assistance in increasing the effectiveness of the congregation's ability to give care.  The writer developed a three-month training program for twelve persons to study the theology of caregiving, stages of human development, and caring skills.  Following training the trainees entered hurting situations under the writer's supervision. The vital characteristics of smaller membership churches and the nature and origin of the office of elder are presented that these elders and churches may more effectively function in the upbuilding of the body of Christ.
