These roles are administration, denominational and ecumenical responsibilities, evangelism, and leading worship and preaching. The scope of the study has been limited to the expectations of the laity within the United Church of Christ in the Lehigh Valley. It has been limited to this group for several reasons. This is the denomination of which I am a member and the area in which I currently live. The churches were readily accessible to my study. The research was aided financially and developmentally by the Penn Northeast Conference of the United Church of Christ, which includes the Lehigh Valley as one of its major areas. The project is in response to several areas of concern within the practice of ministry. Job descriptions are a part of most secular employment. These descriptions help the employee determine the expectations under which the employee will work. There are probably parts of the job not covered in the description, but the description will be helpful in meeting or understanding the basic expectations of the employer or client in respect to that job."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860264128872448,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:11.472Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:11Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"980580ab-33a5-436d-b459-52d377727e3a","accessControl_ssim":["6a3018a0-c6b2-4c7a-91f8-6f12da7b8df7"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The development of a model planning process: for the designing of alternative worship experiences in a free church tradition"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:07Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["8f51d587-7158-413b-8af7-dd4e6a187568"],"hasLease_ssim":["4021fad7-4953-4228-aab3-e3d11d48c8a0"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. A committee of four or five people who are concerned about the mission of the church and who have a deep commitment and an enthusiastic spirit would make the survey, evaluate and act upon the results, and monitor future membership dynamics. In acting upon the results, the committee would evaluate the existing programs in light of their effectiveness and meaning for the membership. If the leadership of a local church follows the suggestions in this report, several important changes may be expected to be the result. First, the research (the actual inquiry, data collection, and analysis) will help a church to discover the reasons why people are joining and/or leaving the church; to identify attracting and repelling factors and activities of the church, areas of specific needs of the people the church is trying to reach and strategies of the church in responding to those needs, the population objective of the church’s outreach, and factors influential in attracting and retaining future members; and to provide some candid data for making policy decisions. Second, policy decisions informed by the research will help to change congregational activities, emphasis, programs, pastoral priorities and activities, the direction and objective of the church’s outreach, and will help to promote attitudinal changes. And, finally, the problem is that some churches will continue to decline no matter what is done. In those cases, almost all that can be promised is that leadership will understand the root causes of the decline."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257300545536,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:04.961Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:00Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:26:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"19468d40-8706-4ec5-8ce9-788cc30fddb7","accessControl_ssim":["e454dd2b-2d43-4874-aa69-156869494cb9"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The use of touch and patients’ perceptions of its effects: in the practice of ministry in a general hospital setting"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["5a4b70e5-8273-4cbd-af9c-06146cba62b8"],"hasLease_ssim":["8f68a2f7-804b-42c0-bcdf-507ff2d5b77a"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1980"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The study explored patients’ positive and negative feelings and thoughts about being touched and the places on their bodies where they were touched. The goal of the study was to determine whether physical touch was or was not important to the patients. If it was affirmed that being physically touched by pastors, physicians, and nurses was important to patients, such information could be helpful to those professional people in ministering to patients. The methodology consisted of taking a taped interview from thirty randomly selected, adult patients from the hospital census who had been visited by their pastors. A pre-designed, structured, interview questionnaire was used by the investigator in the interviews. To do this, a “semantic differential” scale was designed and tested in various congregations including those of a liturgical tradition as well as those without such a formal heritage. The scale was used by laypersons to indicate their responses to specific video-taped gestures of their minister in the process of preaching a sermon in worship which they attended. Scores from the scale were then used as a basis for discussions between the laity and their minister concerning the ways in which his gestures were being understood. Three congregations, along with their ministers, became more aware of the relationship between verbal content and non-verbal gestures used during the preaching event. The project was conducted with only those persons who had the capacity both to listen and to see what was happening during the sermon. The basic need addressed herein is discontinuity in church operations which results from frequent personnel changes. Especially, churches which exist in a highly mobile and changing society are affected by a high rate of leadership turnover; and, therefore, require some method which facilitates easy transmission of essential information and speedy adjustment of leaders to their tasks. Otherwise, the frequent turnover of leadership may result in loss of essential information, waste of valuable time and energy, and misappropriation of resources…Described herein is a process by which a local church may develop an up-to-date operations manual. The document, produced through collaboration with local church leaders, provides a systemic method to transmit information and to acclimate leaders to responsibilities and tasks necessary for continuity in church operations. Group methods, research of existing policies and information, individual interviews of persons possessing special knowledge, and other such data-gathering methods as necessary to develop an up-to-date manual are described. Additionally, this project enlarges ownership of information concerning church operations by gathering such information into one document, which is presented for official adoption by the church. It identifies some key questions which must be considered in order to institute a cablevision ministry, including questions of theological and ethical foundations, and describes how some, who have already instituted a cablevision ministry, have answered these questions."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860257357168640,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:26:05.015Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"93ca7636-bbbc-44a1-aeee-4f5d625121bd","accessControl_ssim":["b68e82ba-1405-4f5c-8fb5-08418f787698"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["A ministry to inactive members at the point of conflict or resistance: A dissertation submitted to the faculty in candidacy for the degree of Doctor of ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["d26a128e-1ac1-4fa7-b9fd-8fa2d7184621"],"hasLease_ssim":["8d246c71-11f3-488d-b5e4-4c4e512608ce"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Beginning in January of 1976 and continuing through December of 1978, this experimental ministry took place with the inactive members of the congregation of Christ Church, United Church of Christ, Annville, Pennsylvania. During this three-year period the pastoral ministry in the parish was carried out in the normal manner. This project became an integral part of the parish work and was seldom mentioned, in order to avoid affecting the results. The members of the parish were aware that I was involved in a doctoral project, but very few had any knowledge of the area being studied. Further, the project did not alter the remainder of the parish program in any significant manner, with the exception of the fact that a number of the inactive members responded in some measurable way. The project is, therefore, a plan which can be readily adapted and utilized by any parish in which inactive members are a concern. My intention in this project was to explore the problem of that conflict in the parish which is related to inactive members by demonstrating that a ministry at the point of conflict or resistance would be helpful to the inactive persons involved and the parish itself, with the result that the learnings from this ministry would provide practical guidelines for pastors and churches to minister with inactive members."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248248188928,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.328Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"04606a86-b4fc-41f1-970b-16392109456d","accessControl_ssim":["1bfd956e-7fc0-4aec-ba9c-18d88adb2ab9"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The intensive retreat model: an experience aimed at facilitating spiritual growth"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:51Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["520f8fb4-2b5a-4f5c-bf5e-5c96d5cc750d"],"hasLease_ssim":["20829298-6c2e-410d-bd53-170f39bb1913"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Lancaster Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["1979"],"video_embed_tesim":[""],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. Such a map affords some general sense as to where one is headed and some insight into certain key checkpoints that can be utilized in gauging one’s movement. An overview of the scheme and anticipated development of this paper would serve the same purpose. The starting point here is the identification and the description of the basic problem which has spawned this project–namely, the fundamental estrangement of persons from their spiritual roots. This discussion occupies the first chapter and is followed by an outline in the next chapter of the theoretical foundations for a practical response to the problem. The response ultimately developed here is related to the phenomenon of religious mysticism. The third chapter describes in detail the Intensive Retreat, a model constructed for the purpose of enabling spiritual encounter and patterned on the mystical route. The next chapter reports on the data-gathering completed on the final experimental trials with the Intensive Retreat model and elaborates on certain hypotheses related to that model, while the final chapter considers conclusions and implications that have been suggested by the overall experience of this project."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248347803648,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.422Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:52Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-12-18T15:25:55Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"a369f67d-8c9b-44c5-9207-ec78c3eab95e","accessControl_ssim":["8d591870-955f-4673-a9df-f0343d11cebf"],"depositor_ssim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["martins02@moravian.edu"],"title_tesim":["The relationship of unresolved grief to crisis in marriage: help for the pastor/counselor. Divorce, extended separation, moving, retirement, and a host of other factors may precipitate grief reactions. The focus of this paper, however, is on grief experienced as the result of death of a loved one, or significant other person. Such grief will be defined and clarified in psychological terms, emphasizing the importance of resolving the grief by expressing the full range of emotions associated with it. It will be shown through several case studies that unresolved grief, the inhibition of natural feelings occasioned by the death of a loved one, may be a factor in marital crises. Finally, an attempt will be made to indicate how pastors and pastoral counselors may use the data herein both to prevent and treat some grief disorders."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com","martins02@moravian.edu"],"_version_":1851860248520818688,"timestamp":"2025-12-18T15:25:56.588Z","score":1.0}],"facets":[{"name":"resource_type_sim","items":[{"value":"Unknown","hits":13089,"label":"Unknown"},{"value":"D.Min.
