This descriptive case study follows the journey of a preacher and congregation as they move to figural preaching over six years. A representative sampling of sermons is studies in order to trace this movement. A representative sampling of the congregation is interviewed in order to portray its response to this change and to discover connections between figural preaching and Christian practices. Noticeable change in the practice of preaching is discerned and described. Millions have established a personal website and some have instituted interactive communities. These Internet communities are shaped through real time text interaction and a neo-hermeneutic induced by digital text. The consequence is that the Internet medium is changing the way that we understand community. Thirty-five interviews were conducted from participants in the 1989 consolidation in Chicago's Englewood and the San Francisco consolidation after its 1989 earthquake. The study explores the roles of ritual and pastoral care in highly conflicted situations using the praxis-theory-praxis method of practical theology and through the lens of trauma and reconciliation. One such vow is the parental intention that the child become Jesus' disciple, obey His word, and His love. Yet we have historically provided little guidance for the fulfillment of this vow. I designed and conducted a nine-week class to assist these parents. The class presented strategies for teaching children about the Bible, Christian worship, prayer, church traditions, and the Christian life. This project examines the social context of this crisis, and it asserts that this pecuniary exigency is essentially theological in character. The relationship between Christian vocation (belonging) and stewardship (belongings) is explored in light of a Trinitarian perspective on the doctrine of election. The qualitative narrative study method is employed to explore the relationship between belonging and belongings in the lives of four members of a local congregation, Harbor View Presbyterian Church, Charleston, South Carolina. This project began with the development of a curriculum that incorporated all of the events and teachings in Jesus' life. The participants engaged in daily personal study and weekly small group interaction over a 12-week period. They also agreed to lead another individual or group through the same study. Through pre-program, post=program, and final interviews, the participants reported cognitive, attitudinal, and behavioral results. The author determined through research that servant evangelism has both a biblical and theological foundation. After studying how a pastor can lead his church to an outward focus, the author enlisted volunteers to participate in servant evangelism projects. Three social science research techniques were used to measure the effectiveness of the project. These included a questionnaire in pretest/posttest format, interviews, and focus groups. Chapter 1 offers the stated goals of the project, as well as an in-depth introduction into the church and local community surrounding the Eastern Shore of Virginia. Chapter 2 specifically addresses the biblical, theological, and historical foundations for spiritual gifts. A thorough examination of God's active Spirit in both the Old and New Testaments is presented. Chapter 3 discusses three current training programs for spiritual gifts-based discipleship ministries as they relate to the local church. Two existing church models will also be highlighted as well. Chapter 4 is the step-by-step implementation of the ministry project that was successfully completed at Modest Town Baptist Church. A detailed analysis of all relevant statistical information is also presented and discussed within the context of this chapter. Chapter 5 offers an evaluation of the ministry project.
