The author carried out the project in the worship of Downtown Christian Church during the Sundays of Advent creating a liturgical form of worship related to advent themes, using also banners, paraments, and a preacher's robe. Two Southern Baptist churches recently gained new awareness of how to penetrate subcultures around them.  A five-session series introduced both laity and clergy to demographics, group identity concepts, focus community profiles, spiritual gifts, core church competencies, and interviews with experienced community penetration practitioners. Participants' reactions and churches' interest in such training varied widely.  Some feel that tracking trends to adjust outreach is a novel but needless exercise. Demonstrating an improved understanding of conflict, improving existing styles and skills of conflict management, and developing strategies that facilitate reconciliation were the goals of this project.  The project methodology included lectures, discussion, role plays, case studies, and questionnaires on conflict management. Examination of post-evaluation data indicates goals were reached. Some of the clergy and all the laity that participated had been on a 'Walk to Emmaus.' The study proved that there was a positive effect on the United Methodist congregations. Five small group experiences were researched over a two-month period: guided imagery, lectio divina, covenant discipleship, praying the office, and a service group. Dr. Newton Malony's 'Religious Status Inventory' was used to measure the participants' faith maturity levels before and after their group participation. Method of research: program evaluation of an existing spiritual formation model whose end goal is discovery of spiritual gifts to 'serve the world.' A questionnaire, primary documents of the model, information-rich case studies and being a participant observer, were the means of gathering and interpreting data. Conclusion: Overall lasting aspects of this model contribute to individual spiritual growth including conscious raising, education and validation of existing discipleship.
