The main question of this study is what church plants will grow and flourish in Swedish soil. The study focuses on the qualities of the suitable plant and not on how to plant it.  The spiritual soil and climate in Sweden is different from that in the US.  Secularization has gone so far that people have started to talk about the 'theophobia' of the Swedish people.  What kind of church plant will be able to reach ordinary, secularized, unchurched Swedes?  Through a multiple case study that examines three churches planted between 1992 and 1996, the study tries to answer that question.  A comprehensive review of literature provided the framework for the study and aided the author in generating a check-list of eighteen standard church planting principles. The study investigated the extent to which these standard principles were present in the case study churches and to what extent they were manifested in an indigenous way in these churches.  The final objective of this study was to develop an indigenous model for new Methodist Churches in Sweden based on the principles discovered in the review of literature, the employment of these principles revealed in the case study, and the historic and contemporary challenge facing Methodism in Sweden. Therefore, the last chapter proposes a model featuring ten important characteristics that should mark new Methodist churches in Sweden which would be capable of reaching unchurched, secular people. A model for a new ministry role, the Sunday School Shepherd, was developed and implemented at First United Methodist Church of Silsbee, Texas. Appropriate training and encouragement were given. Participants in the Shepherd ministry found the training useful and were able to function in valuable ways within their class structures. This tool is designed to measure the presence of maturity based upon ten traits in the life of the Christian. A biblical foundation for each of these traits is established from the gospels and epistles. The importance of integrating the meaning of spirituality, maturity and the Great Commission is discussed. The statistical testing demonstrated that questions did an adequate job measuring the internal reliability of six of the ten traits. The Ten Traits for a Lifetime can be an effective model for churches interested in becoming purpose driven around making disciples. The theological foundation for this thesis is based on a study of various biblical characters and biblical teachings to specifically observe how God identifies with the hearers of his message. A review of available literature and interviews with experts revealed significant agreement on the pervasive influence of television on the lives of Canadians. The focus of this thesis is not on the content of television but the medium of television. This thesis attempts to zero in on why television is so successful at attracting hours of weekly attention from so many Canadians. It goes on from there to suggest what preachers can do to better attract the attention of their congregations in order to better communicate biblical truth. The findings, from this research, were then put to the test by means of a survey. Nineteen people were selected because of their expertise and surveyed to confirm the findings in the literature. They were specifically asked how preachers can adapt their preaching methods to better identify with their television-saturated audiences. The purpose of this quantitative and qualitative research project was to determine those factors which contributed to this chasm between youth and church and make recommendations to address the problem.  Based on survey returns, barriers to youth participation were identified. The Christ-hymn of Philippians 2 is the scriptural model upon which the experiment was originally conceived. A small group of interested persons was assembled for the project. Using interviews, journals, and other tools which were utilized to measure the resources (money, possessions, but also time, health, values, etc.) of the project participants, steps were determined which might aid others who are interested in fashioning a simpler way of living. Many churches are closed systems when it comes to dealing with its young. These 'closed systems' focus on the youth of their parishioners but fail to venture out into the community to those that are trapped in poor communities or ghettos. There is a widening gap between the 'haves' and 'have nots' in all of society and particularly amongst middle and lower class blacks. How does a middle class black church in the inner-city reach out to lower class youth surrounding its church? How do we empower the laity of a congregation to effectively reach unchurched youth? These are the questions that I will explore in this professional project. The vehicle we will use to get from Hip Hop back to the 'saving station' in the church is a contemporary outreach ministry called JAM (Jesus and Me). My goals were to 1) provide a place where young people could be transformed and feel safe, 2) create small groups that would allow the students to share more intimately and experience growth along with accountability, and 3) equip volunteers, both adult and youth, to carry out ministry to unchurched youth in the inner city.
