Could it be that some church members were giftless and therefore incapable of rendering spiritual service? Did some members possess more than one spiritual gift while others possessed none? Would participants who could not identify their spiritual gifts at the outset of a learning experience be able to identify them afterwards? What should the nature and outline of such a course of study be? To what extent should the biblical materials on spiritual gifts be covered? Are there any indicators from one’s personality that might help him or her discern spiritual gifts? How important are they in the lift of the church? And how do they relate to the fruit of the Holy Spirit and direct commands of scripture? These questions and others prompted the author to design a course focused on the spiritual discernment process. They assent to the authority of scripture, but they have also been impacted by the undercurrents of the postmodern culture. The purpose of this study was to investigate the impact a postmodern worldview (social imaginary) has on the engagement of Christian college Student Affairs/Student Development personnel with their Gen Z students, and in particular, their engagement with their students’ hearts, minds, and practices. Utilizing the book of Proverbs (representing biblical wisdom concerning young people’s hearts, minds, and practices) and the “three great untruths” of Lukianoff and Haidt found in The Coddling of the American Mind (representing postmodern “wisdom”), this study sought to gain insight into which type of wisdom was being described when Christian college Student Development personnel talked about developing the hearts, minds, and practices of their students.\r\n\r\nThis study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with eight Christian College Student Development personnel from a singular CCCU (Council for Christian Colleges and Universities) institution in the Midwest. Interviews were conducted with Student Development professionals from a variety of offices within the Student Development division of that institution. The interviews were analyzed and compared in order to identify worldview categories and themes.\r\n\r\nThe introduction and literature review focused on four key areas regarding the impact of postmodernism on the engagement of Christian College Student Development personnel with the hearts, minds, and practices of their Gen Z students: the roots and impact of modernism and postmodernism on contemporary American higher education (in the introduction); the good, true, and beautiful life according to the proverbs of Solomon; the good, true, and beautiful life according to the modern social imaginary; and the good, true, and beautiful life according to the postmodern social imaginary.\r\n\r\nThe resulting analysis revealed these primary findings. First, CCSDP answered questions about living truthfully, flourishing, and doing good in the world in ways most aligned with the wisdom of Proverbs. Second, there was also significant alignment in their answers with modern and postmodern social imaginaries. Not many churches have a well-defined plan to promote their members’ ongoing spiritual formation. Yet many pastors in the Reformed tradition have discovered a vision for spiritual formation and renewal in the writings of Gordon-Conwell theologian Richard Lovelace. Lovelace’s Dynamics of Spiritual Life (1979) has been credited by pastors including Tim Keller (Redeemer Presbyterian, New York City) as the most influential book in their philosophy of ministry and church strategy. However, Lovelace’s work was generally theoretical and remains unknown to modern leaders. This study asks: How do pastors and leaders in the Reformed traditions, specifically between ages of 35-50, apply the renewal principles of Lovelace in the life of their churches? Further, how has Lovelace’s vision for spiritual renewal been realized in these congregations?\r\n\r\nThis study will include a review of literature focused on three key areas to understand in promoting spiritual renewal in Reformed congregations: (1) Spiritual renewal according to Richard Lovelace, particularly in the areas of prayer, community, and mission; (2) the apostle Paul’s theology of spiritual life, especially the gospel, spiritual life, regeneration, the Holy Spirit, resurrection, prayer, community, and mission; and (3) organizational and congregational culture, including how churches can promote their desired values, behaviors, and practices in congregational life.\r\n\r\nThis study utilizes a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with six pastors and leaders from various Reformed churches and ministries who are either familiar with Lovelace’s theories or have been unknowingly shaped by them. The methods of qualitative research are detailed, the process and strengths of qualitative research are discussed, and the researcher’s position and the limitations of the study are acknowledged.\r\n\r\nThe interviews focus on gaining data with four research questions: (1) How do pastors in Reformed churches describe their theology of spiritual renewal? (2) How do they promote spiritual renewal among their congregants—in terms of prayer, community, and mission? (3) How do they integrate spiritual renewal into the culture of their congregation or organization? (4) In what ways and to what extent do their views of spiritual renewal compare to Lovelace’s theories?\r\n\r\nThe study concludes with a final discussion of Lovelace’s key insights and contributions, a summary of the findings, and recommendations for promoting spiritual renewal in churches in the future. Attachment theory has revolutionized marriage counseling through models such as Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT). There is discussion within the literature concerning the compatibility of these models with a Christian worldview, as well as examples of and proposals for integration. This study utilized a qualitative design using semi-structured interviews with nine counselors from various denominations and backgrounds who incorporate their Christian worldview explicitly within their counseling. The interviews focused on gaining data with three research questions: How does a Christian worldview shape a counselor’s understanding of marriage attachment? How does a Christian worldview shape a counselor’s process of counseling (including goals, interventions, assignments, and self of the therapist)? How does a counselor with a Christian worldview utilize the Bible in counseling (including specific passages and biblical themes)? The literature review focused on three key areas: Adult attachment and marriage counseling; biblical framework for marriage and attachment; and integrating Christian worldview and attachment-based marriage counseling. This study concluded that there are diverse and dynamic ways the Christian worldview shapes a counselor’s approach to attachment-based marriage counseling. They use a range of biblical themes and passages. They find the work deeply personal, but feel resources are limited. Christian counselors as well as pastors have an opportunity to deepen their reflection on the biblical framework for marriage attachment, related themes, and specific biblical passages. This study utilized a qualitative design blended with the execution of a literary dissertation to gather extensive literature review from resources related to hermeneutics; to Ancient Near Eastern ritual and ritual practice in general; and to homiletical principles for Christocentric preaching. The literature review focused on gaining data with three research questions: What are best practices in navigating hermeneutical challenges in interpreting Leviticus? What are best practices in determining meaning in the ritual texts of Leviticus? What methods can be helpful to seeing the work of Christ in the Old Testament and specifically in Leviticus? \r\n\r\nThe literature review focused on three key areas to understand in preparing for and preaching a text of scripture: the hermeneutical principles wisely applied to the study and preaching of any biblical text; the methods and mindset most helpful to the examination of a ritual text (for this study); and the theology and strategies conducive to Christocentric preaching from any text in scripture. Three areas of literature review were approved in order to make this a literary dissertation rather than a standard qualitative dissertation (one area). My Leadership Narrative traces my progression from a challenging polygamous upbringing to pastoral ministry, and from secular leadership in central banking to theological training. This illustrates the transformative power of resilience, faith, and divine intervention. My DMin research project builds on these experiences, my Philosophy of Leadership, and my Context Exegesis. It combines classroom training with practical fieldwork to strengthen the leadership skills, character, and intimacy with God of church planters in the Foursquare Gospel Church of Asokoro, Abuja, Nigeria. Fifteen participants were mentored so they could develop Servant Leadership and Adaptive Leadership skills, which aligned with Jesus’ approach to leadership. A digital questionnaire, the Conceptualizing Leadership Questionnaire (CLQ), and the Spiritual Assessment Inventory (SAI) were used before and after the training to evaluate the participants’ growth in these areas. Before training, 8 participants reported gradual spiritual growth, and 7 indicated substantial growth. After the training, 12 reported substantial spiritual development. Special attention is given to contemporary child developmental theories (chapter two) and to counseling techniques which may be used with children (chapter three). The crisis situations of grief, divorce, and hospitalization illustrate situations in which the pastor may use the insights of child developmental theory and child counseling techniques in the pastoral care of children. It is hoped that this will lead to an increase in confidence in discussing the matter with those who come from denominational backgrounds which find this confessional Lutheran practice unpalatable. To this end, a study and accompanying materials will be prepared from a biblical and historical analysis of the doctrine to strengthen the resolve and comfort of those who attend the study in discussing and, if necessary, winsomely defending this teaching to their friends and family who disagree with it. Success in this matter will be measured by a combination of surveys and personal interviews with congregation members and study participants, particularly to see if the use of case studies was effective in the teaching of this doctrine. It addresses the persistent reluctance of Vietnamese Church leaders to confront this issue, a reluctance often rooted in cultural, systemic, and theological barriers. Drawing upon interdisciplinary research in sociology, psychology, and trauma studies, alongside a re-examination of Catholic theological foundations on human dignity and marital equality, this work proposes and evaluates a Prophetic Pastoral Narrative Preaching Model. Knowledge and understanding of the purpose and the presence of Black people in the Bible will build a sense of belonging, while allowing infinite religious expression. Analysis of preaching Black presence in the Bible to build up self-esteem of African American congregations is the intent of this thesis.
