Can the comic spirit enliven preaching in these contexts? This is not just a theoretical question but a practical and pastoral one. A praxis for preaching with the comic spirit may be characterized by the intentional use of humor, levity, wit, and comedy to reveal theological insights. Sermons in LGBTQ+ affirming congregations can be more effective by utilizing expressions of the comic spirit that are informed by the respective contexts, with special interest given to the intersectional identities and lived experiences of queer listeners. The author, an openly queer ordained minister in the United Church of Christ, engages this topic as a self-examination of praxis and centers his research primarily within three Houston congregations. Before presenting findings, literary reviews include a queering of cishet scholarship in comic homiletics and an examination of queer theologians as cognate to further inform the contextualized praxis. Where cishet homileticians have studied stand-up comedians, the author bridges the queer research gap by exploring drag performers as muse. A four-part research approach—including surveys, focus groups, field observations, and interviews—serves to inform the developing praxis and prove the thesis: the comic spirit can enliven and enhance preaching in LGBTQ+ affirming contexts. Three homiletical strategies for a queer-informed comic spirit emerge from the project: (1) disarming tension to engage the listener, (2) fostering congregational connection, and (3) balancing depth and levity. Each of these strategies serve to impact the listener through queer-affirming sermons that inspire theological insights."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["DMin Papers"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["5fee7d74-6f58-4c88-a3b1-860b847dd7c2"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["bc8257c6-8b09-484e-a9a5-eca5a518cba7"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836659645558554624,"timestamp":"2025-07-03T20:38:51.949Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:06:06Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:06:20Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"d78322ee-6aff-4d57-8da1-4d81bedfc83e","accessControl_ssim":["c361f64e-9469-490f-80b0-a9c285460bb4"],"hasRelatedMediaFragment_ssim":["4744fcb6-99b2-4a56-8068-d0b7cde977b5"],"hasRelatedImage_ssim":["4744fcb6-99b2-4a56-8068-d0b7cde977b5"],"depositor_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"title_tesim":["Embodied Disruption"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:06:05Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-07-03T18:06:05Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["ddf3c0fc-a85d-4493-971a-bfa9935654b3"],"hasLease_ssim":["3f26c11b-62eb-4d64-b5f9-2f6cf4e5c463"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"degree_tesim":["Master of Arts"],"discipline_tesim":["Religious Studies"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Chicago Theological Seminary"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"resource_type_tesim":["Thesis"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Kasperson, Casey"],"keyword_tesim":["Embodied epistemology"],"subject_tesim":["Authenticity (Philosophy)","Religions--Relations","Knowledge, Theory of","Critical thinking"],"abstract_tesim":["This thesis offers an interreligious cultural analysis of faith, not as a comparative study between traditions, but as an inquiry rooted in embodied epistemology. Drawing primarily from Christianity, Islam, and Secularism—with Buddhism providing structural support and Taoist thought influencing non-dualistic themes—this work defines faith as radical faithfulness to one’s own experience, marked by openness rather than absolute commitment. It argues that what is often called “truth” is merely faith that has been absolutized and idolized, undermining critical reflection. Black women are the most abused group of people on social media today with violence specifically against Black women, Black Muslim women and Black trans women at an all-time high. Violence against these Black women is as a result of America’s desire to still define these persons as stereotypical Jezebels, Mammies and Sapphires, continuing what Dr. Emilie Townes calls “the cultural production of evil” through social media now. My primarily conversation partner, Dr. Na’im Akbar, suggests celebration is one strategy that breaks the chains of psychological slavery which negatively impacts African American people. With Dr. Akbar’s theory of celebration in mind, this paper examines how the act of celebration can be utilized as a spiritual care practice on social media today to care for Black women, Black Muslim women and Black trans women who experience violence on social media. I seek to encourage a reimagination of the Islamic tradition and its position in America through a considerate historical narrative, and a reinvigorated contemporary vision which centers Malcolm. In order to accomplish this this thesis is an effort to establish Malcolm as a school of thought, a tradition,as other intellectuals have done by their own efforts or the works of their successors. This is done through an identification of the traditions which informed Malcolm and which he represented. In this process it is not only an attempt to make a method of Malcolm, but it is to increase the legibility of the traditions he represented for the reader, while further imagining what a developed conversation between those traditions look like, as separate and as synthesized entities. In the case of this essay the traditions which Malcolm most saliently represented are the Islamic tradition and the black radical tradition. I make the case that Malcolm represents a highpoint in the confluence of both traditions, which I argue have always had a connectivity, from the black radical tradition’s outset. While I also state that no intelligent Islamic discourse, nor radical discourse can ignore this confluence. Lastly, I outline a number of the means and sources from which a contemporary Malcomian discourse can be derived, in order to authentically represent this confluence in adequate intellectual and practical terms."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/downloads/112784a9-b7ef-4a80-8522-4bf220591b46?file=thumbnail","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-approving","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-depositing","admin_set/default-one_step_mediated_deposit-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_ids_ssim":["112784a9-b7ef-4a80-8522-4bf220591b46"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Master's Theses"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["a73e1c05-49cd-4a4b-93e7-8fd66694bdf5"],"file_set_ids_ssim":["112784a9-b7ef-4a80-8522-4bf220591b46"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Theses and Dissertations"],"account_cname_tesim":["ctschicago.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"read_access_person_ssim":["yasmine.abou-el-kheir@ctschicago.edu"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"_version_":1836555492536614912,"timestamp":"2025-07-02T17:03:23.886Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:24:53Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:24:54Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"0cf829ad-9bf7-4e17-9ae1-3c2c5f963530","accessControl_ssim":["896cd120-bbd2-4a73-9837-000107a203dd"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Selected Members of Grace Avenue Bible Church, Sacramento, California, with Personal Evangelism Skills"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:24:52Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:24:52Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["af6038fb-2527-45cc-bc91-d06b9e2a3c05"],"hasLease_ssim":["349c5256-f943-4fbb-9dba-844da2de0610"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr. Jake Roudkovski"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"location_tesim":["California"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. The project began with the project director researching the field of evangelism in response to the significant influx of non-believing immigrants from the countries of the former Soviet Union into the area over the past two years. This research aimed to determine essential skills for personal evangelism. Upon completing this evangelism research, the project director compiled an annotated bibliography and identified specific personal evangelism skills on \r\nwhich the project would focus. The next stage involved developing a curriculum \r\ndesigned to equip participants with these personal evangelism skills. Finally, the project director conducted training sessions to equip selected members of Grace Avenue Bible Church, Sacramento, California, with personal evangelism skills. Second, using a team of experts in church revitalization, including LeRoy Ford’s book Design for Teaching and Training, I developed a workshop that provides an overview of various multiethnic church revitalization factors for the selected pastors. Third, I equipped the selected pastors with the multiethnic church revitalization workshop to increase their knowledge and understanding of multiethnic church revitalization. Finally, for the project completion, I encouraged the selected pastors to carry out the responsibility of revitalizing their churches, using the multiethnic church revitalization competencies. A total of twenty pastors attended the workshop, and the workshop lasted for about eight hours with six different sessions. The implementation of the project has also increased my knowledge and skills in multiethnic church revitalization."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"_version_":1834751796538507264,"timestamp":"2025-06-12T19:14:25.339Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:08:01Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:08:03Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"1bf31c84-fd30-4d93-8e4b-dfa11fa4599b","accessControl_ssim":["c45b74c1-b3a4-488c-a5a1-dbc5e020e8ac"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Equipping Selected Florida Southern Baptist Haitian Pastors in Florida with Doctrinal Competencies"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:07:59Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:08:00Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["686e0663-aca6-4b6e-915a-418f8e04b515"],"hasLease_ssim":["a2476aa5-4fac-46b0-9f01-cf4ab6bd4b94"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr Jake Roudkovski"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"location_tesim":["Florida"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min. As such, \r\npastors and ministry leaders must be doctrinally and scripturally equipped so that they may, in turn, teach key doctrinal competency skills to their respective congregations. The purpose of this equipping project was to highlight the need for sound biblical doctrines with a selected group of Florida Southern Baptist Haitian pastors. I designed this project to expose the danger that exists in churches where congregants are not well-equipped on essential biblical doctrines. Many benefits result from churches where the leaders and \r\ncongregants are well-versed and equipped in sound doctrines. On November 23, 2024, twelve Southern Baptist Haitian pastors in Miami, Florida, participated in equipping sessions. The purpose of the equipping sessions was to expose the selected pastors to key Baptist doctrines as highlighted in The 2000 Baptist Faith and Message. After successful implementation of the project, a posttest administered to the select group of pastors evidenced growth in knowledge of essential doctrinal competencies. The participants’ hopeful request for subsequent training is also a clear manifestation of the accomplishment of the goal set forth."],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["admin_set/default-default-approving","admin_set/default-default-depositing","admin_set/default-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Default Admin Set"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["public","work_editor"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"_version_":1834751396530880512,"timestamp":"2025-06-12T19:08:03.862Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:01:02Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:01:04Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"b4d93c0a-ec74-41ba-bd84-ccb090a2ca8e","accessControl_ssim":["f4d0edbb-35ab-49ce-bd9c-c575cb6a9c37"],"depositor_ssim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"depositor_tesim":["kstamant@nobts.edu"],"title_tesim":["Developing a Men’s Discipleship Strategy for Kingsley Lake Baptist Church"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:01:00Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2025-06-12T19:01:01Z","isPartOf_ssim":["admin_set/default"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["970ff975-22da-4009-a0ad-aeb6ba10794e"],"hasLease_ssim":["e859265b-7896-4a78-8424-0ee958045ded"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["DMin"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["New Orleans Baptist Theological Seminary"],"advisor_tesim":["Dr Mike Wetzel"],"year_tesim":["2025"],"location_tesim":["Florida"],"resource_type_tesim":["D.Min.
