This research project seeks to establish the value of lament rituals to promote self-awareness and grief expression for medical staff as they serve patients in Palliative Care, Intensive Care and Emergency Rooms, by witnessing and experiencing the provision of lament rituals to medical professional staff by spiritual care. Spirituality provides a safe space for medical professional staff to explore their own sources of hope while confronting illness in the journey of life. The project director researched the field of strategic planning. Basic skills for effective planning were identified. The project director also researched the field of curriculum development. The information gained from researching both fields was used to develop appropriate strategic planning curriculum. Twenty-four learners attended the equipping sessions. The church council members represented varying degrees of past exposure to strategic planning. This thesis reports the findings from a six-month training course delivered to a group of actively serving chairpersons in the Evangelical Missionary Church of Canada. The thesis project was designed utilizing the concepts of action research. Chair participants and two board governance experts evaluated the effectiveness of course. Board members from the participant's congregation assessed the impact of the course on the Chair's confidence and performance. This research involves governing principles from psychology, management, pastoral leadership, especially in theocracy study. The project director developed eight Sunday school best practices from a survey for the '2012 Georgia's Fastest Growing Sunday Schools.'  The project director developed the survey results into a training curriculum and enlisted and trained a group of adult Sunday school leaders in a workshop held over four weeks. Most congregational leaders would come to an agreement that developing new leaders is a critical responsibility of the local church, yet some United Methodist Churches actually do not have an intentional process where leaders are being developed. The Day-Long Lay Leadership Retreat was expected to train the United Methodist Church Book of Discipline mandated Administrative Committees.
