The author first examined the Missio Dei from a biblical and confessional perspective and then researched the confessional boundaries for the establishment of a Lutheran mission society in Michigan. The author conducted a series of interviews with several mission congregations planted since 2006. Comparing current mission models with the researched boundaries for Lutheran mission resulted in the discovery of a divergence between theology and practice. Jesus summed up these as the two most important commands. The purpose of this project was three-fold: to explore how people understood what it means to practice loving God and others to determine the impact this has on their spiritual growth; to determine if Christians demonstrate a holistic approach to loving God, or instead have a primary or choose a preferred method to loving and drawing close to God; and last, to work with individuals and small groups of Christians to recognize the import and centrality of the commands. The project occurred in seven stages. A comparison of the information gathered from the focus-group research to the post-training survey indicated the success of the project. It discusses not only the elderly population demographics in the U.S., but also the necessity for ongoing provision of preaching and ministry to them. It examines the current literature and position of the Church on the provision of pastoral care at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. We also explores different biblical responses to the ongoing mystery of suffering, sickness, aging, and healing. How did some biblical characters grapple with their suffering? How did they perceive the goodness of God in the face of it? This chapter provides an in-depth analysis of the genre and theological, contextual, and historico-cultural background of some biblical texts concerning suffering, aging, and healing. We will demonstrate the Church's understanding and renewal of preaching in the last fifty years through a review of current literature and official documents of the Church. Though this review will reflect the perspective of the Catholic Church, this chapter also offers an overview of what constitutes Christian preaching and what its rich history, renewal, and methodology have to offer the Christian Church in general. We examine the current practices and ministry of preaching at nursing homes and assisted-living facilities. A review of current literature on preaching to the elderly population enriched the understanding of what it means to preach an effective homily to them. Chapter Five demonstrates a four-part workshop that will aid chaplains and ministers to be more effective preachers to the target population. This workshop attempts to answer the question, 'What constitutes effective preaching with which residents of nursing homes and assisted-living facilities can connect?'"],"rights_statement_tesim":["https://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"],"thumbnail_path_ss":"/assets/work-a3b75da7abded620ab321410c80d102e5e2417b71c54de7ba7d4b0363da904f7.png","suppressed_bsi":false,"actionable_workflow_roles_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-approving","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-depositing","f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8-default-managing"],"workflow_state_name_ssim":["deposited"],"member_of_collections_ssim":["Aquinas Institute of Theology"],"member_of_collection_ids_ssim":["416f1c5f-a1c7-4596-b214-83b6abadee9c"],"visibility_ssi":"open","admin_set_tesim":["Metadata Only"],"account_cname_tesim":["rim.ir.atla.com"],"human_readable_type_tesim":["Etd"],"read_access_group_ssim":["work_editor","public"],"edit_access_group_ssim":["admin"],"edit_access_person_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"_version_":1791130338066432000,"timestamp":"2024-02-17T07:30:00.749Z","score":1.0},{"system_create_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:54Z","system_modified_dtsi":"2024-05-22T03:13:00Z","has_model_ssim":["Etd"],"id":"994541da-80ef-425c-9e04-eb9e1ef496e4","accessControl_ssim":["da667eba-5661-4a59-a238-5ca9c238e5e7"],"depositor_ssim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"depositor_tesim":["ckarpinski@atla.com"],"title_tesim":["Nurturing leaders of Pilgrim Rest Church toward intentionally embracing the Pauline slave of Christ model in ministry"],"date_uploaded_dtsi":"2023-10-12T16:45:53Z","date_modified_dtsi":"2024-02-17T02:36:59Z","isPartOf_ssim":["f6c99b2a-5c91-4444-8946-01a1837f1fd8"],"hasEmbargo_ssim":["016d3696-378e-49f5-94f7-049f47cf5b7c"],"hasLease_ssim":["acda0357-cf8f-4c2a-a1f8-254af190c08c"],"show_pdf_viewer_tesim":["1"],"show_pdf_download_button_tesim":["1"],"institution_tesim":["Atla RIM"],"degree_tesim":["Unknown"],"degree_granting_institution_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"advisor_tesim":["Steven C Roy"],"year_tesim":["2014"],"resource_type_tesim":["Unknown"],"types_tesim":["Text"],"creator_tesim":["Alvin Lloyd"],"publisher_tesim":["Trinity Evangelical Divinity School"],"subject_tesim":["Servant leadership--Religious aspects--Christianity","Clergy--Office","Clergy--Training of","Theology","Paul, Saint, Apostle"],"language_tesim":["English"],"abstract_tesim":["This project was designed to nurture within the minds of leaders of the Pilgrim Rest (PR) Church a biblical perspective of the Greek term doulos in relation to Christ. I proposed that doulos be translated slave based on the Pauline assessment and modeling of this biblical doctrine. Relevant data was gathered using a mixed-method approach to equip PR to parallel two motifs or models: slaves of Christ with slaves to sin who support the prosperity gospel heresy. The slave language was challenging as PR consists of offspring of American slaves. Yet PR leaders agreed to participate in this project to dispel misunderstanding and encourage an examination of biblical teaching on this avoided topic.
